Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Making baby food

Need some help... LO is 6 months. What foods should I stat out making? He has had jarred food for about 3 weeks. What's safe, what should I avoid? I'm concerned about nitrates, what do I use fresh and frozen?

  • I absolutely love making food for my son. We started with oatmeal, sweet potatoes, avocados and bananas, all homemade.

Nitrates are really a non-issue unless you have well water and store-bought baby food has the same (minimal) risk as homemade.  You can read more about it here: https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/nitratearticle.htm#.UO8GS29X3VU

The same website also has lots of great recipes and tips.

  • I made DD1's baby food and am doing it currently for DD2 and I love it!

We started out with veggies first. Right now since we have only had her on solids less than a month, we do 1 new veggie a week. We decided on veggies first because for the most part they aren't sweet. I want her to get used to veggies before we give her sweet fruits.

So far we have done carrots, peas and sweet potatoes.

For the most part, she gets fresh. The exception was the peas. I bought them frozen since it is hard to find them right now.

  • We started with oatmeal and barely, then moved to the following in this order:

Peas, sweet potatoes, avocados, apples, banannas, squash, green beans, peaches, mangos, etc. Our LO never like carrots, but if he doesn't like a veggie we just mix fruit in it since we make all the food. We freeze in ice cube trays and mix as needed since he eats 3-4 ice cube size portions at each meal.
