Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Taking a long time to fall asleep for naps...

My son has never really been a good sleeper, but we started sleep training a couple months ago and he learned to put himself to sleep. It was generally taking him about 10-15 minutes of fussing before every nap before he was asleep, but that length of time has gradually lengthened and all week it's been taking him an average of 30 minutes to fall asleep for each nap.

I try not to interfere because that usually only makes it much worse or results in an entirely missed nap, but I'm frustrated because it's throwing our entire schedule off and his naps also seem to be about 15 minutes shorter or more each. He's also having trouble in the evenings and at bedtime I believe because he's overtired. Any thoughts? Could it be related to separation anxiety?

  • Could be separation anxiety, or he could be trying to master new skills.  I know that around the time my baby was learning to roll over, crawl, and pull-up (not all at the same time) it took him longer to fall asleep for naps and the naps became shorter.  I'd give it a little while and see how he does.

  • Just a few questions to ponder... His he teething? Is he getting sick? Is he learning something new? My LO never slept good through any of those times. Although his teething has been the worse case for not sleeping good. Every baby is different. I know our LO has a little separation anxiety because he's with me all day every day but that has not affected his sleep schedule or naps. Good luck! It's probably just a phase just like everything else is.

  • How many naps is he taking? This could just be a sign of the 3-2 transition. He might be awake because just not tired enough when you're putting him down.
