solids and constipation?

LO hasn't gone in 4 days...Should I be worried? Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: solids and constipation?

  • I would give him some prunes. 4 days is a bit too long for after they are on solids. LO got really constipated with rice cereal and it took a week to get her back to normal.

Give some water with meals too.

I asked my pedi about this today. She said things like sweet potatoes, squash and bananas can cause constipation. She reccomended prunes, peaches, plums, and pears to help keep DS regular.

This us what my pedi advised as well. If LO gets constipated offer the "p" solid foods to help them go.
  • Ella has gone from pooping once a day to once every two days since we started solids. She got really backed up once and started pooping little pellets and I gave her apple sauce and she was all unblocked within a few hours!

good to know...I gave him some prunes tonight. Keeping my fingers crossed that this will do the trick. Unfortunately, DS favorites are sweet potatoes and squash..all the ones that are constipating.

  • We've had issues with DD too.  She didn't poop very often to begin with, but now that she's eating solids, she's pooping about once every 5-7 days.  It's usually very firm and she cries while pooping.  We gave her pears the other day and it seemed to help, so we might have to do that more often.

  • If you're comfortable mixing (or what have you) adding some apple to the sweet potato can help out. I did this because, like you, ours loves the sweet potato too. I added the apple to help keep things movin' along. So far so good!

Apple can actually cause constipation too. Due to the pectin in apples it acts as a binder and firms up stool. Apple juice can relieve constipation as it doesn't have as much pectin in it and the sugars can help. So just be careful about using apple. My pedi reccomended mixing pears with squash and sweet potato (my DS's faves!) since it won't change the flavor all that much but can help keep things moving

yeah...I was thinking the same thing about apple. Good idea about the pear...My DS loves loves all the orange veggies!

And just to add...I contacted the pedi and he said that frequency of Bowel movements are not a sign of constipation, only hard pebbly stool is...So still after the prunes, LO hasn't gone yet...5 days! Since he hasn't gone, I have no idea if he really is constipated yet...I'll continue giving him prunes.

You will knobeing they are constipated! My DS was constipated and I could tell he was pushing because his face turned red and he was grunting. Since then I have been trying to give pears or prunes daily.

prunes, water and a belly massage worked! Poor baby was constipated. Red face, teary eyed, grunts and a cry at the end.... :( So prunes and pear will be a daily treat.

    thanks all for your input!!
