One of my DH's favorite books is Atlas Shrugged and he is hell bent on choosing the name Dagny (after the main character) if we have a girl.  I'm not totally opposed, but wanted to hear what everybody else thought of it!  I can't decide if it's classic sounding, or a little too nerdy. One thing I do really like about it is that the meaning of it is "new day."

I don't think it's very pretty either, sorry.  When I saw the subject the first thing I thought of was Atlas Shrugged.

I do not hate it at all, but It does not cry to me feminine either, if thats what you are going for. And I love Ayn Rand

I like it a lot! Loved the book and mentioned this to DH as a name choice and it was vetoed immediately. I don't think it sounds nerdy, at all. It's such an uncommon name and those are the ones I tend to like.

I know this is supposed to be for a girl name, but I can't help but think of Dabney (the actor Dabney Coleman). I like the uniqueness of it and what it means to your DH, but this name wouldn't be my first choice. Good luck to you on the final choice!

Reading the post title, I assumed this was a boy name. I don't love it, but it could also be used as a mn.

 I do love the meaning though!

I know it's a girl name, but it has always come off as masculine to me. What about Daphne? It's close, but seems much more soft and feminine to me.

I don't have any issues with Dagny, I just can't see it on a little girl who isn't Norwegian or Icelandic or something. It's one of those names where my mind automatically thinks Viking. Atlas shrugged is up there but it wouldn't be my first thought.

I worked with someone named Dagny. She was a very tough, cool, edgy type of girl. I really liked her, so I kind like the name too. I can't really picture it on a child though.

I thought it was a boy's name--and an ugly boy's name at that. No go. Daphne would be a much better choice.

I like the name Dagny (trying to convince DH Dagny > Elise).  My first thoughts are not necessarily to Atlas Shrugged, but, like what was suggested to me, a lot of people will assume that. 

I've asked my mother what her thoughts of it were; she said that it sounded masculine and that it was a boys name.

Never heard of the book but the name kinda sounds British to me. I'm not really a fan, it's too "out there" for me.  It's definitely different and has a cool meaning.  How about Daphne?
