I don't know where to start

I am 10 weeks pp and had complications so I was just cleared to exercise. I am allowed to walk as much as comfortable and ride a stationary bike for 10 minutes at a time. I still have 20 lbs to lose and can only fit into three pairs of pants and t shirts. I would like to start losing weight but I'm not sure how to start with my limitations. .I EBF, so I know I need a lot of calories. We don't keep a lot of junk in the house, and I try to snack on fruits and veggies, and am allways hungry. For the most part we eat pretty healthily. For example, today for lunch I had a spinach salad with no cheese and a tablespoon of vinagerette, some shredded chicken from arotisserie chicken, some roasted cauliflower, and a small portion of orzo salad. Three hours later my stomach is growling! I can't take walks outside with LO b/c it's too cold right now. Any suggestions? I want to get into my clothes!!

Re: I don't know where to start

  • I think walking and the way you are eating is really good. I know how bad you want to get it all off but give yourself a little break. It has only been 10wks and I know everyone says this but it is true "it took 9 months to put it on and it can take 9 months to get it off"

I think if you just keep doing what you are doing you will be fine.

I gain 85lbs with my pregnancy and it took me a year to get back to my weight.

  • I'm just frustrated because I've always been able to lose weight through regular exercise pretty quickly. But because I'm limited physically right now, I can't get to the gym like I would want to. I guess I feel like I should be doing more.

  • What PP said. I had complications too and thus restrictions give yourself a break to heal the weight will come off. I'm 7 mos pp and it was probably mos 5 or 6 before I lost all the weight and fit into all my clothes. Could you get someone to watch baby for 20 min so you could go walk? What about fitness DVDs while baby is asleep start slow. But breastfeeding and eating right while help it will take some time
  • I found it difficult to lose the last 10-15 lbs while EBF since I had to keep my calories up enough to keep my supply up.  Once I stopped BFing around 12 months, it fell of fpretty easily!

  • Have you considered Weight Watchers or a similar program? I gained 55 lbs with DD and have dropped 30 lbs on WW. She turns 3 in a few weeks and I'm still 10 lbs away from pre-preg weight. It will take awhile, don't be discouraged. My new goal is to be below 150 by my sisters wedding this June. GL!
  • 9 months on, 9 months off.  Keep doing what you are doing.  Eat healthy, exercise as you are allowed to, and give it time.  There is no rush, especially if you had complications.

  • Take it easy on yourself. If you have physical limitations, follow them.

  • If you want to get some good low-impact exercise, try the Walk Away the Pound videos by Leslie Sansone.

They're essentially walking in place, but there are different levels.  If you're sedentary or have health issues, you just walk in place slowly.  It's good for simple exercise that isn't extremely taxing on your body.

I agree with WW, but you might not want to do the points counting part, but the simply eating better part.  That focuses more on healthy foods than caloric intake and will help you steer clear of empty calories and too many chemically foods filled with aspertame and preservatives.

  • I only gained 20 lbs during my pregnancy, and it took almost 6 months for it all to come off.  The last ten I had to resort to spinning.

  • We eat pretty healthily: i make most things from scratch including stock, eat quinoa or wheat berries instead of rice, turkey instead of beef, low salt, etc. i let myself go over the holidays and stopprd losing weight bu I'm ok with that.now we are back to our normal eating habits. We live across from a nice park but it's too cold to take LO. It's too cold outside by the time DH gets home. I could take him to MIL to go by myself but it's not worth the time it takes to get him ready and drop him off. I do have exercise videos but we have a one bedroom condo and notmuch room. Looks like I am going to have to suck it up and either go to the gym when DH comes home or rearrange things inside so I can do it here.

I'm not expecting to lose it all, but I would like to at least fit into my fat clothes. I lost 35 lbs the first 6 weeks and now I've stalled and feel hungry all the time.

Weight Watchers here also!  I did it after DS and lost 35 of the 15 I gained with DS, who is 2 and a half by the way!!!  Just joined again a week ago and had my first weigh in and am down 4.5 lbs.  You can join for free now.  You have to pay 3 months upfront (about $50).

  • I know that EBF-ing burns a lot of calories. Remember, you're still eating for two! After having DS, I struggled to drop my pregnancy weight and ended up talking to a dietician. I didn't start dieting until after switching to formula {My milk supply wasn't great and DS's Dr. was worried about his weight gain.}. At that point, the dietician suggested I use a "diabetic" diet. It helped me balance what I needed. They also have baby yoga dvds that I remember as being fun!

  • You need more healthy fats and protein in your diet too.
