Parenting after a Loss

Tylenol for teething?

Yay or nay?

DS has already cut 2 teeth, but has 3 more RIGHT at the surface.. he's been in such a terribly cranky mood and isn't sleeping well (which, adds to the crankiness)!

Did you give tylenol when LO was teething?  How often?  And, how many days in a row?

I just don't want to get in the habit of giving it to him every day x amount of times a day while he's teething.. but, at the same time, I don't want him to be uncomfortable :(

Re: Tylenol for teething?

  • We haven't given any to DS yet, but DD was a terrible teether. We found that ibuprofen made her more comfortable than Tylenol. It was up to maybe 4 days in a row at times, and once or twice we did have to alternate tylenol/ibuprofen because she was really in pain. We did try to limit it as much as possible but there's no point in having your kid suffer.

Hope those teeth come in soon and your DS feels better!

  • Tylenol?  DO IT.

Once we did, we were like, "Why didn't we do this sooner?"  We started around 8-9m but regret not doing it earlier.  He was in pain and so were we.

The Hyland's tablets are also good!

  • Tylenol never really helped B. Advil did and I switched to it as soon as she was old enough.

I gave/give it frequently. Before she could tell us it hurt if she had been clawing at her mouth and hands in her mouth all day I'd give it at a minimum a half hour before nap and a half hour before bed.  Some days I would give it at every allowable interval because she was in agony. I know at least once we gave one night time dose for at least 2 weeks straight because the poor kid was just miserable and it at least gave her enoguh relief to fall asleep. She's a really slow teether though and it can often take 4-6 weeks from the time I see the tooth under the skin to when it finally breaks through. 2 more teeth, 2 more teeth.

  • Yes, I give tylenol, but mostly at night to help him sleep.  I know if I had a tooth ache, I will not be able to sleep.  He started teething at 10months and got much better at this around 12months.  We haven't had to give too much tylenol because he was a late teether.  Go with your mommy gut.  Hopefully he will have 2-3 days of bad pain and you won't have to give tylenol everyday for too many days in row.

  • We did (and still do) give DD tylenol for teething.  At 19 months she still only has maybe 6 teeth, but there are 4 more in the works as we speak.  We debated but ultimately didn't want her to be in unnecessary pain.  It really disturbs her sleep, which makes her even more upset...  Good luck mama!

  • Yes, I give Tylenol when she is exceptionally cranky from teething.  What actually works really well for us in a amber teething necklace.  Well, at least I think it helps.  She was a hellion with her first tooth--I bought the necklace and she wears it pretty much every day since then.  She still has teeth that bug her but a lot of them popped out and I didn't hear a peep from her about them.  We've also tried Baby Orajel, which didn't really work.  And teething tablets--also didn't really work.

Where did you but the teething necklace?  I've seen others wearing them, but never seen them in stores.. and, was curious if they actually work.. and, why..

  • Yep, give as needed.  After 6 months of age, I prefer Ibuprofen.
