February 2013 Moms

How much are you working right now?

I mean how many hours-or days a week?

What kind of work - sitting, standing, walking, carrying stuff?

I've recently cut my shifts from 5-10hr shifts on my feet waaaay down to 4 shifts and only one of them 10 hours-the rest more like 6. Am I being a wimp?

If I liked my job more, I'd try to work there until the day I go to L&D. But I hate my boss and want him out of my life as soon as possible. Thinking about being done with the job totally Feb 1, though I know we can't afford it.

For those of you at home already, and those of you who LIKE your jobs and wish to stay there, I envy you!

Re: How much are you working right now?

  • Just started maternity leave today.

I'm a second grade teacher so up until yesterday I was working 7:45-3:45 on my feet practically all day.

  • I'm still working full-time, but it's a desk job.  I have a box under my desk that I put my feet up on all day, and I rarely have to get up.

That said, I'm so ready to be done.  I can't focus on anything (my mind is all over the place) and everything is taking me exponentially longer than it did in the past because I can't focus.

  • I've been off work since wk 31 and it's due to GD with uncontrollable sugars. My job was a non stop rat race on my feet and the shifts were torture. Sometimes I would have only 8 hrs between shifts and they would be 8-10 hrs long. I DON'T miss it at all, just being able to get out and see people I do miss.

  • I work 4 9 hour days. I have a semi desk job. I have to get up a lot. I plan to work until I have the baby.
  • I'm still working my normal hours, roughly 8-9 hour days M-F.  I do work from home 3 days a week which is wonderful, going into the office (and wearing uncomfortable maternity work clothes) is exhausting though.  I work a desk job, but my office is HUGE so even if I only go from my car to my desk (and the bathroom a million times) then back to my car it is a long walk, in heels!

I plan on working up until I go into labor, and I think I will work from home full time those last few weeks if my manager approves it.  I am definitely lucky to not be on my feet all day!

  • I'm still working full time. For me that's 6:30a-5p Mon-Fri.

ETA: I do DC so it's a lot of lifting small children, making meals, playing, cleaning, etc.

  • It varies, I'm working anywhere from 44 - 52 hours/week, 5 or 6 days/week (two jobs - one's a FT, 40 hr/week job, one's a part-time job at a library, where I work 4-12 hours a week).

Both jobs are mostly desk jobs, so I'm usually sitting in front of a computer, but both periodically require me to get up, walk around and do some light lifting.  Nothing unbearable, but lately the chair at the reference desk at the library has been a bit uncomfortable for me, so I sort of welcome the opportunities to get up and help a patron find a book or something. ;-)

  • I work from home, but I am sitting at my computer grading term papers for hours at a time.  This week alone, I have 62 Philosophy papers to grade and I only have three days to do it in.  Yesterday I spent about 14 hours sitting at my computer, grading papers.  My back is KILLING ME!

In addition to this, on the weeks when I don't have papers to grade, I work as a freelance editor for an online book publishing company, so yeah... still at my computer for many hours a day.

  • I'm still working 8-9 hours a day but I sit at a desk so it's not anything physical, but I work in customer service so it's very stressful most of the time. :S I can't wait to get out of here for 6 weeks! But I'm working up until I go into labor. blah.

  • I'm a teacher so I'm pretty much up on my feet all day! I even chaperoned our field trip to the science museum yesterday and did a lot of walking/counting heads, lol! But, I really like my job so I find that I have the energy....though I usually am in my pjs at 4 in the afternoon....

  • Working full time until baby comes. I'm a PE teacher, so I'm up and active most of the day.

  • I have 2 day shifts left before I'm done. They're 12 hours. I just finished my nights.

It depends on the day what I do most. Sit, stand, run, walk, tug, pull, lift, stab. Little of everything.

  • 40 hr week at a desk up until baby arrives!

  • Technically I have a desk job, because I'm an attorney.  But in reality, I'm on my feet a lot.  I'm getting files, putting them away, running to court carrying files, standing in court, etc.  I'm working more now than I did during the rest of this pregnancy.  That's just because of the way judges have scheduled things.  I'm in the office or court about 10-12 hours a day 6 days a week.

I loved my job.  But all of this is making me hate it.  I feel like almost everyone I come into contact with is stupid.  No one has any concern for the fact that I'm completely exhausted.  Thank goodness I only have 7 weeks left.  I don't think I can make it more than that without flipping out on someone.

  • Doing 40hr 5 days a week until next Friday! I have the time so I am taking it. I can't stand my driving commute and concentrating at work has become little to nothing. Especially since I am still congested and feeling so sore these days.
  • Your not being a wimp at all. It sucks working when your huge and moody. I still go to school, for culinary, five days a weeks for about 5 hours a day. I do a lot of running around when I'm not cramping or throwing up here, but I got pressured into signing a letter of resignation at publix two weeks ago because they didn't want to have to deal with me during my 8 hour shifts working the deli.I needed a sit break every couple of hours or I would get intense lower body pains, and they insisted i was killing my baby and didn't take his health seriously. so i am taking the financial loss. If they hasn't done so, I would be aiming to work more like four hours a day three to four days a week. But shizz happens i guess.

  • I am still working 5 8 hour days a week. I work in a hospital lab mainly setting up cultures for microbiology, so it basically a lot of standing in front of a bio hazard hood streaking agar plates. I do sit as much as I can, doing computer work and during down time.  Every 3 weeks I have 2 shifts that I'll have to go up to patients rooms and draw blood, those shifts are getting really hard, it is a lot of walking and bending over.

  • I teach high school. Working until my due date (or whenever the baby decides to arrive). I work 5 days/week, from about 7am-3pm (plus whatever planning and grading I do outside of school). It's a lot of walking and on your feet time, so I got a stool in my classroom. I am definitely feeling aches- especially today (the baby has definitely shifted down lower). It can be hard, but I always have viewed pregnancy as something that isn't an illness...so I suck it up. Really, the hardest thing about my job isn't dealing with pregnancy symptoms...but dealing with the attitudes of very entitled 10th and 11th graders (and their parents...).

  • I have 2 days left but I've been working 45 hours a week. It's a desk job but sitting is almost more painful than standing right now and the commute is getting exhausting. Couldn't have picked a better time to be done!
  • 40 hrs, but from home and in bed b/c I'm on modified bedrest.  I wish it was 0 though...people are making me crazy which is not good for my high BP!!

  • I work a full-time desk job and will until I go into labor.  This is the precedent set by seven of my co-workers who have had babies in the past couple of years.  Since I'm only huge, uncomfortable, and suffering from sciatica, thinking about how they made it to the office every day until the end inspires me.

  • No, you don't sound like a wimp.  I teach first grade, so I work from 7-4.  I'm on my feet all day except for about an hour of plan time and 20 minutes of reading aloud.  I crash when those kids go to specials classes! :)  I'm sooo ready for maternity leave.  I could really use a mid-day nap!  Of course, at home there's just another kid to take care of!

  • Still working full time and will do so until she is born.  Last year was our YE close and I had to work a ton of hours (I'm in finance.)  Taking it more easy now, trying to get out of the office by 5:30 pm.  Will start working from home beginning of Feb.

  • I am so amazed and inspired by all of you hard working mamas! My due date is February 12th and for the past month I am working at my job 3 days a week for 4 or 5 hour shifts as a hostess at a restaurant. I was a waitress for over 7 months of my pregnancy and I couldn't take eight to ten hour shifts running around nonstop without a lunch break or time to sit down. I made a decision to take this last month to rest and relax before my little girl comes into the world. Its great to get out of the house and work three days a week, it's been perfect for me!

  • I've recently cut my hours back from 9 hour days to 8 hours.  The extra hour off each day right now is a huge help.  I work mainly at a desk but I do get up frequently to wait on customers and what not.  However even sitting at a desk is painful for me on my back and it keeps getting worse.  I am trying my best to stay until she is born, however we will see how the next few weeks go. I'm in the same position- need the money however don't want to jeopordize my health of the health of the baby.  So we shall see what the next few weeks bring.  My replacement also does arrive till I'm 38 weeks  (the company I work for is small and I'm the first one in the history of this company to have a baby and the company is run by men and I'm going to stop there since I have a lot of issues and if I didn't need the insurance I"d say goodbye right now)

Anyways I don't think you are a wimp.  Growing a human being is hard work!  Good luck :) and take care of yourself and your baby.
