Babies: 6 - 9 Months

getting baby fever again but my hands are tied

DD is about 8 months old, and she is just awesome. DH and I want 2 or 3 kids, and we want them to be close in age. So we have been thinking about when to ttc. problem is, I switched to a new insurance policy and there is a 24 month waiting period for maternity coverage. So my maternity coverage doesnt kick in until July 2014. But according to Affordable Care Act, effective Jan 2014 all policies must cover prenatal care, etc. So i am not sure now if my new effective date of maternity coverage is Jan 2014 or July 2014. I called my insurance company to ask and they couldnt give me an answer. Anybody know for sure?

We are buying a home in about 6 months and would like to start ttc as soon as we get settled in, so approx in the fall. Hopefully my maternity coverage kicks in on Jan 1 2014, and that way the majority of my care and the birth will be covered. I am really hoping we dont have to wait until July 2014....that seems like so long.

I should just chill out and enjoy this time with DD, and just let things play out the way they will. But i am a planner and i cant help it! lol. I just feel like there are so many things that have to fall into place before we can ttc.

  • Are you sure the maternity coverage just doesnt mean maternity leave?

  • I believe you would be covered under the affordable care act by January 2014- Post this question on the Working Moms board. There are women in many professional fields including insurance and HR that post there and someone might know the answer for sure.

  • I am in a similar situation, and a friend of mine was telling me about her prenatal care with a NP midwife and home birth. All of her care and delivery cost 3000. I had never considered a homebirth, and probably never would, except now I am because of the cost. My first pregnancy and delivery were very easy, so if my second one was similar a homebirth would be fine. But I'm guessing there is no coverage if, heaven forbid, something went wrong or an emergency arose during pregnancy or delivery and I needed hospital care. I may look into a second policy with a really high deductible that includes maternity for just myself to cover in the case of emergency, then drop it after baby is born. I have a lot of research to do, but just thought I'd throw my idea out there!

  • I was in HR prior to lo's and I know that pregnancy cannot be considered a Pre existing condition. Therefore, regardless of when you switch over, even if you're 8 months preggo, you have to be covered. I'm assuming this is what you mean and not maternity leave? I would definitely suggest referring to the guide or just all them and ask. Good luck.
