Allergic to the tape from the bandage????

I have had 2 previous CSections and seriously about the worst part of my CSections are dealing with the tape off the bandages afterwards.  It kind of becomes one with my skin and WILL NOT come off for anything.   I use oils and alchol and I have tape on me for months after the surgery.  The worst part is after the bandage is removed, the sticky skin sticks to everything, other body parts, underwear, shirts, everything ...  Basically I am curious if anybody else has run into this at all and if they found any remedies for this???  It is major pain to deal iwith while the incision is trying to heal.

Re: Allergic to the tape from the bandage????

  • I had a very uncomfortable reaction to the adhesive on my bandage. It felt like an abrasion. It was more painful than my incision.  There wasn't much that I could do about it unfortunately, it took about 2 weeks before it felt better.

  • I'm a new mom as of November of 2012 and I had a c-section. I found the tape to be very uncomfortable. Although every time I showered, I would make sure to soak the tape for a long period of time while in there (helps if your shower head detaches). Not all of it came off at once, when I had my 2 week post-op checkup, the doctor removed the rest for me. Even after that, I still had residue from the tape that took some time to get rid of.
  • I broke out in a rash from the bandage while in the hospital. I had the nurse take the bandage off after my first shower.. Once at home it blistered and was so painful.  I ended up going tommy gp and getting hydrocortisone cream to heal the area.  Took a few days but it finally cleared up.
  • I get rashes from any bandages. To get the sticky off, get it wet and rub. It took me a long time to get it off!

  • They make special adhesive removers for skin that you can buy (if you search Amazon.com for "adhesive remover" several will pop up - just make sure it says it's for skin, because you'll get the other items like Goo Be Gone too that are not safe for skin), most of these are in packages similar to what moist towelettes come in. You can use these towelettes when removing bandages (lift one corner of the bandage and rub the towelette against the adhesive part of the bandage as you pull), and also afterwards to get the sticky stuff off.

  • Ask your doctor or nurse for adhesive remover wipes. I would think they have some in the office they could give you. I am a NP in surgery and we have them in all pt rooms in the office. They are awesome.

  • One of the docs from my ob practice took my bandage off very gently with my first c/s and somehow I still got tape burn. I thought it was my incision burning at first, but my DH said it was not that, so we checked with the nurse and found it was tape burn. It was odd to me, I don't typically have sensitive skin, but they gave me some kind of blue cream to put on it and it felt better instantly (can't remember what it was, this was almost 4 years ago). I'm hoping to avoid that situation this time, it was very uncomfortable before we figured it out!

  • I had an allergic reaction to the tape too. It gave me chemical burns. My OB said he'd never seen it before. I had to use a warm wet wash cloth for about 20 minutes to wet the tape enough to pull it off without taking off skin. I think the warm water from the cloth helped with the stickiness but it was still annoying for a few days. I just stayed in some looseish sweatpants and low rise underwear for those few days.

  • Oh my goodness yes. My OB took off my bandages after my cesarean. I winced on one side so he went slow, but didn't go so slow on the other and it actually took skin off with it. The sores from that hurt worse than the incision for over a week. I'm surprised it didn't scar.

Definitely going to make a note of it if I go in for a RCS this time around and hope they have something else as an option.

  • I found out after previous surgeries that I am allergic to dermabond (the liquid adhesive most often used) and stereo strips (a kind of surgical tape) so when I went into labor we had to tell every nurse, doc, etc not to use either. Apparently it's a common allergy but people don't realize they have it because you don't often come into contact with these kinds of adhesives in every day life. Ask your doc if your incision becomes inflamed because it may get infected. Antibiotics will help but may be tough to take if you are nursing. I also turned out to be allergic to hospital undies. Who knew?!

  • I feel for you.  My nurse gave me some adhesive towelletes - but I still had adhesive for months.  They did such a bad job taping me, my nurse almost cried as she took it off and she was swearing up a storm - they wrapped it so wonky they even had hair in it - owies!  I had forgotten about the adhesive fun.  Oh yay.

  • The tape really irriated my skin too.  I actually just stuck panty liners to my underwear where it hit my incision once I was home and that worked well.  That way I didn't have to have any tape on my skin but I still had something on the incision since it was still draining a bit the first week I was home.  I didn't even need that after my second was born.
  • I took my bandage off while still in the hospital on the 2nd day while in the shower with lots of soapy warm water, used the towellets they had for tape, oil, etc ... basically anything and everything I thought would take off tape.  Luckily it didn't burn, but the tape just basically merged with my skin and would not come off ...  I asked for my 2nd CSection to see if they could just not use tape or see if they had any alternatives, but they didn't they just used less tape.  I will be researching options, talking to the doctor and buying my own if I have to .... It was like my skin jus sukced this stuff in and would not let go - it was a pain because my clothes would stick to it for months and it would pull my incision in different dirrections.  Thank you all so much for your stories, advice, etc....  I really appreciate it!!!
