Everyone says these are so great but then I hear the occasional "flat head" claim and now this... I think I'm too scared of them to try it now.

I just got 2 and still plan on using them. I will keep an eye out for moisture, or if they pee through their diaper, I will wash the cradle part. I think as long as you wash it like you would sheets from a leaking diaper, and don't keep your baby in it all day, it is fine. I only plan on using it for night sleeping, and nap in the crib.

We've been using ours for almost 3 months and the boys love them. I wash them weekly and live in the desert, so no mold issues here. Also flat spots can occur anywhere a baby sleeps in the same position too long, if you turn their heads like you would in a crib, you should be fine.
From day one I've put bassinet pads in my RNPs (which means you can't use the straps particularly well) which I wash at least once a week, or more often if a baby wets through overnight. So, no mold for us!
Seriously? Aren't parents smart enough to wash and dry the fabric thoroughly so as to prevent mold?
I love our RNPs. Could not live without them. And I don't use the straps either. I have the Lamb and the Bunny. the girls have lived in them for the first 5 weeks. No signs of flat spots because I always make sure to turn their heads a different way each time.
I think common sense is the best thing you can use in this situation.

Word. We don't have RnPs; they weren't out yet when my babies were infants, but I'd get one if we had another baby. I hate recalls that are for lack of common sense.
I'm still keeping the ones we got and will just keep an eye out for moisture (and obviously, wash/dry them regularly). As for flat spots, our pediatrician recommended Noggin' Nest, so we will use those in addition.

We got one second hand from my cousin and there was mold underneath the top cradle part. I just took it apart and washed both parts in the washer with some bleach. Haven't noticed any mold since. No biggie.
Mold can grow almost anywhere. We used ours for 3 months for night sleeping, and I don't recall there ever being moisture anywhere. I had a blanket down on it and washed that once a week or so.
In regards to flat heads, mine both wore helmets, but there's no way to prove it was the RnP. Our doctor said its common in twins. My friends son had helmet therapy and did not own a RnP.
