Sunscreen

I need some advice on sunscreens. I didn't realize how many different brands there are until I tried to buy some yesterday. I never took baby girl out in the sun this past summer. If we were outside we were under shade so I never used any on her and now have no idea which brand to use.

Which brands do you like? Which SPF do you recommend? Is there a brand you've noticed that wont burn her eyes should she get any in them?

Also, she has a beach hat put pulls it off soon after I put it on. She has thin blonde hair and I don't want her head to burn, would you put sunscreen in her hair? I plan on getting a beach chair in some shade too but it's inevitable that we'll be in the sun for some time. Thanks for the advice!

Re: Sunscreen

  • It depends on if you want to go all natural or not. And yes I put it in their hair. I like the pink water babies mainly because its long lasting and we spend a lot of time in the sun in the summer.

  • I am taking lo on vaca next month so I am in the same boat.  He is good with hats so I think he might be OK but he is fair and blonde as possible too.

I went to Skin Cancer Foundation to see what their seal of approval meant.  So to start, they confirm that any claims, spf, non irritating to eyes, etc, written on a bottle are actually true.  I plan to only buy those.  They also said more than 30 is not necessary so I will probably stick with 50.  Baby SPF isnt necessary but I do plan to buy one that says it does not sting eyes.

I did see a hair spray spf meant to be sprayed on a baby's head/scalp.  I didnt look into it any further though.

Lastly, Diapers.com had decent prices comopared to CVS.

  • oh and you need sunblock, not sunscreen.

  • I use either Neutrogena or Babyganics brand for babies.  Neutrogena also has a sunblock stick for the face, ears and neck, which are easier to apply for those areas.  Spray sunscreens are a no-no at this age.
  • We used episencial last summer. He has fair skin and red hair, and I put it thru his hair even though he wears a hat with no problem. The episencial is thick stuff, but does wash off in the bath easy. It doesn't seem to come off in just plain water easily though.
