Baby Names

Need help: Leah or Lainey

I'm gonna have to give you my last name in order to get your true opinion on this one (I won't spell it correctly): DD#1 is An.na L.ee Edelmun (without the puncuation) and we usually call her by first and middle together.

For DD#2, Lainey Grace SOUNDS better with our last name but Leah Grace just FEELS right. Leah Edelmun is kind of a tongue twister when put together though since the first name ends with a vowel sound and the last name starts with a vowel. You almost lose the "ah" in Leah when you say it fast. Do you think it sounds ok and I am just crazy?

Re: Need help: Leah or Lainey

  • I strongly prefer Leah, despite the slight running together of the names.

Leah and Anna is an awesome sibset!

  • I just said Leah with you last name a few times and I think it sounds fine. I prefer Leah too. Lainey is a nickname to me.

  • I don't like Lainey. Not even a huge fan of Leah but do prefer it over Lainey. And I would not worry too much about the last name. Use the name that feels right... especially since there is a good chance she will be spending the majority of her life with a different last name anyway if she gets married.

I think Leah sounds nice with your last name...I don't get hung up on it at all.  If this is the name that feels right then I think you should use it!  It's lovely.

So yeah, you might be just a touch crazy.  Wink

    I have to agree!

  • I don't think it is too bad. I prefer Leah of the two because I don't think of Lainey as a stand alone name. I think of it as a NN for Elaine, and I like Leah Edelmun better than Elaine Edelmun.

  • I don't think Leah sounds bad with your last name at all!  I love that name.

Lainey is a nickname IMO.  How about Elena/Elaina Grace if you like Lainey?

  • I strongly prefer Lainey as a nickname than first name. I would also suggest Elena, Elaine, Helen, etc.

Leah is weird if your DD1 goes by Anna Lee.

Both fit fine with your last name.

  • I kind of see what you're saying about Leah running into your last name, but I don't think it's a big deal.  Most people won't say it that fast.  I prefer Leah to Lainey.  Lainey is a nn to me.  I also like Lila.  I say go with Leah...you're overthinking it!

  • I much prefer Leah to Lainey. Lainey sounds too much like a nickname.

But an Anna Lee and Leah might be a bit much. Maybe Laine or Laina and call her Lainey?

  • I think if you call your DD Anna Lee then Leah is too close to Lee.

I think Laine is pretty with the nn Lainey- otherwise it sounds too cutesy.

  • Go with what's right for you - both are very pretty names! Leah is extremely popular now, but it's a beautiful name and Lainey is cute for a little girl.

  • Ok guys, Lainey here is trying not to get offended!!!!
    Haha!!!

Have to say this and throw it out there: can you picture a grown woman named Lainey? Or is it so cutesy that its better suited for toddlers and cheerleaders? Just think about the name aging well.

....and for the record, Lainey is my NN.
