Babies: 6 - 9 Months

STILL NOT Rolling over/baby proofing stuff

OK, so I know this has been posted about A LOT, and several times by me, but my little dude is almost 7 months and is STILL NOT rolling over. I'm pretty sure he can, he just WON'T.

He sits up unassisted and plays with his toys, but if he falls over he can't rollover and sit himself back up.

I'm not so much worried about it from a developmental stand point as I am just anxious for him to do it.

We are in the beginning phases of baby proofing, and it would be nice to know when we need to step it into high gear. We have outlet covers and the cleaning cabinet locked. We should be getting our baby gates next week, and then putting foam bumpers on the table/entertainment unit and complete putting locks on the 1 other drawer and cabinet.

So I guess my questions are:

1. Should I be concerned that he isn't rolling over, the Pedi wasn't at has 6 month appt? Is there anything I can do to get him to rollover (putting toys out of reach doesn't work)?

2. What other baby proofing stuff do I really need? (We plan to keep the bathroom door closed and all window cords are short/out of reach).

Re: STILL NOT Rolling over/baby proofing stuff

  • I wouldn't worry about it. My first son didn't roll over till he was 7m and didn't crawl till 9ms but started walking at 10mos lol! It will all work out on his time. :) Sounds like you have everything you need for baby proofing. I used gates and outlet covers that's about it. :)

  • My son will be 7 months in 6 days and just started rolling back to belly consistently.  He had been rolling belly to back since he was 4 months but he still can hardly sit up.  Like a few seconds top.  His pediatrician wasn't concerned at his six month appointment either so I'm trying hard not to worry either.  My daughter was crawling by 7.5 months and it was total chaos from then on lol!  Trying to enjoy him some what stationary for the time being!  I know it won't be long before he'll be playing in the dogs water bowl :)
  • My DS was the same way...he was sitting up but still not rolling at 7m.  I think maybe around 7.5 or 8 months he started rolling all over the place.  Literally it just happened one day he started rolling across the floor.  He was what I would call slow with all of his milestones like that - army crawled at 9mo, regular crawed at 11mo BUT then walked at 12.5mo.  DS was always more concerned with pulling up/crusing/walking than any of the rolling/crawling stuff.  DD is just about 6 months but she's following in her brother's path so far...just starting to sit up now and has rolled a few times but not consistently and almost by accident I think.

BTW - DS is a normal, healthy wild man almost 4 year old so it really was no big deal.

  • My LO is 8 months and has rolled a few times.  DC said they've seen him do it a few times and DH has seen him do it twice.  I have never seen him roll over.  Pedi said if he's rolled once then no worries.

  • hi there!  so dd couldn't/wouldn't roll over at 7 months and pedi was mildly concerned so he recommended physical therapy my lo.  we went and and basically she suggested that we put her on her side to get her used it first and motivate her to roll the rest of the way.  i used to get her on her side and lay next to her and play with her and snuggle with her and then she'd roll on her own.

good luck!  as for the baby-proofing, no advice here, i'll be looking at other people's responses!

  • We are in physical therapy and to help with rolling is get rid of swing, bouncer and only have a pack and play as your safe "spot". This is what we do and while its hard we ALWAYS have her on the floor playing. We have cats and a three old and its hard to do, but she is making progress! All the equipment does is restrict them. Good Luck.
  • My first two never really rolled until they were fully sitting and trying to get into sitting themselves - so well past 6 months (essentially crawling before rolling).  They would 'turtle' themselves and be mad and that's the only thing that got them rolling.  DD3 seems to be following this trend ad not rolling either.  The older two crawled and walked right no schedule (around 9-10 months and 12ish months).

As for baby proofing - I've never done a whole lot, you have to find what feels comfortable.

     - gates on stairs

     - electrical cover outlets, blind cords up out of reach, electrical cords away

     - putting dangerous chemicals up high and not keeping tiny things in low drawers that LO will be able to (eventually) open

  • dont worry about him not rolling over yet, they all do it at their own rate! but try food! my lo loves bananas! so we would set the whole banana(still in its skin) where she could see it and she would try to get it! she got better at crawling and rolling with this!
