October 2011 Moms

It was bound to happen

I've always been lucky to have an adventurous eater. Asparagus, avocado and quinoa have always been her favorites and she's always turned her nose up at starchy things but it looks like I officially have a picky toddler on my hands.

So, instead of the usual post about more creative things I can feed DD, I'm looking for simple foods that are healthy, balanced and will taste good. I can't give her peas, bananas and plain baked chicken another night.

Any ideas?

Re: It was bound to happen

  • I just linked two recipes down on amyc's post that are huge hits in my house.  Are you following me on Pinterest?  I've got a board for kid food there with some ideas...

Sorry to post and run, C is crying in his crib!  My day is about to start.

  • Abby loves peaches, pears, green beans, and carrots. It's obviously more like a chip, but she also really likes veggie straws. She also has taken a liking to cottage cheese. We make her peanut butter sandwhiches (just PB, no jelly) and cut those up into small bites. Are those the kind of suggestions you're looking for?

  • Black beans! Also DS loves fresh cucumber, tomatoes, brown rice, ground turkey seasoned with a little adobo. Have you tried hummus?

Abby likes hummus, I forgot to mention that! I haven't even thought about cucumber.

    Miss you JG!

  • P loves turkey burgers, meatballs with sauce, chicken and spinach sausage from target, liverwurst, cinnamon toast, and pears. I can't get him to eat veggies, so I do a pouch here and there and I've recently tried Veggie burgers. He also likes Applegate hotdogs.

  • Nora was the same way!  I invested in the pouch maker suggested on a thread last week, so ensure Nora gets her proper amount of veggies in a day. I made squash and applesauce.  I love it and so does Nora!  Also, I like to put her protein, cheese, and vegetables in one big mix to trick her into eating proper nutrition.  I do this in the form of scrambled eggs or a grilled cheese sandwich.  For some reason, she will eat it all when mixed together.

  • My DD has changed, too. One thing I've discovered is that she'll eat things if I present them to her in a different way. She used to love bananas and then boycotted them until I gave her unpeeled coins for her to peel and now she'll eat them again.

My DD has surprised us by liking spicy food so don't shy away from big flavors! We just feed her what we eat and hope some of it gets through.

  • Thanks, everyone. She seems to like elements of food but not meals. So last night, even though she enjoyed chicken and mangoes, she rejected them when I put them in a whole wheat quesadilla. (Her loss, I'm having them for lunch today - yum!)

She used to love hummus. I'll try that again. I also totally forgot about eggs. There are a lot of things I can do there that are a good start.

Off to check the other food post from today.

One of T's favorite meals is a whole wheat tortilla (has your DD rejected tortillas yet?) with black beans, a little salsa and a little cheese melted inside.  I make it like a quesidilla and cut it into strips for her.  She'll eat it with a side of veggies and fruit.

And welcome back!  I feel like I haven't seen you in forever (though I was checked out for the end of last week/weekend...so maybe you were around when I wasn't).

Thanks! I peaced out for most of December due to travel and a crazy month at work.
