Cloth Diapering

Heavy Wetter

I am sure this has been asked a bunch of times, but whenever I try to use the search function, my computer kind of cocks it's head to the side and says "huh?"

Anyway, I am looking for a solution for my 15 month old's heavy wetting.  I am currently using pockets (Fuzzibunz during the day and Alvas at night) with the minky and hemp inserts at night and more often then not, he wakes up soaked.  I am having a hard time keeping him dry during the day with a minky insert.

So here are my questions:  would it be logical to switch to the hemp during the day and scratch the minky altogether?  I can't even do a trip to the grocery store without him soaking through-- this kid is like Baby Alive circa 1980s with apple juice.  It goes in and comes straight out.

Also, what are my options for overnight?  I have read some things about wool, but I am a little confused about my options of covers, soakers and what appears to be pants.  I am really fighting to keep him cloth diapered, as the hubs is starting to fall off the band wagon.

  • Baby Alive! Hahaha! That's a perfect description!

DS is almost 7 months old, and the minky insert in a FB OS Elite has never lasted him long at all. He does much better in sized FB, I guess b/c the inserts are wider. If your hemp is skinny enough to fit your FB, I would definitely switch to that or layer it with the minky if possible.

For ON, I have started using 2 hemp inserts under my MF insert. I haven't tried wool yet, but my understanding is that you typically use a fitted diaper (like sustainableish baby) under a wool cover which could look sort of like a diaper, shorts, or pants (longies). I think you can also use pockets under the wool. Someone (I can't remember who) also posted very recently about having good luck with a fleece cover. I'm not much help on this part, but hopefully someone else can chime in.

  • I would switch to hemp inserts during the day. Layer with MF if you are concerned about absorbency speed as MF tends to absorb a bit faster than hemp. Honestly I just use hemp and bamboo inserts in my pockets with no MF and have no issues. I personally do not find minky to be very absorbent at all.

Overnight I'd switch to fitteds and either wool or PUL covers. I prefer wool, they function just like covers or pants and are breathable. The combo is totally bulletproof for DD overnight.

Yes to all of this. If you do switch to fitteds for ON, make sure they are made for ON (Bububebe, Monkey Snuggles ON, Old School Cool). You may need to use a hemp insert under the fitted flaps (we do). You can get an efficient upcycled wool soaker on etsy for less than $15. If you sew, the Katrina pattern has been fantastic for us.

  • Ladies, thank you so much for your help. The monster sported a FuzziBunz with hemp all day, and I laid out a double hemp Alva for the hubs to put him in overnight.  We'll see how that goes.  I think I am going to snag a couple more hemp inserts and give the bamboo inserts a spin too.

I am going to check this out as well!  I just got a sewing machine for Christmas, so perhaps I will look into making my own!

  • For overnight I use a bumboo fitted with their doubler, a PUL cover over top and a wool cover over all that. That seems to be to only thing that will keep my son dry until morning. I really wanted to just use a fitted and wool cover overnight because its breathable but no matter how many times I lanolized the wool he would wake up with wet sheets.

My son will soak through a disposable diaper overnight too, so he is a big peer :)
