10 month old night waking questions

DD is BF and still wakes 1-3 (sometimes 4!) times per night. She puts herself to sleep at night and for the most part is pretty happy in her crib, so I attribute the wakings to actual hunger (only sometimes, I'm sure), teething, and separation anxiety. We have tried having DH go to her when she awakens, but it only works sometimes. She'll almost always go back to sleep (after crying for less than a minute after her leaves the room), but she often wakes up again 5 minutes later. She did this with me last night too. First he tried, she went back to sleep as best we could tell from the video monitor, and then woke up after a few minutes, so I went to her, she went back to sleep again for 10 minutes or so, and then woke up crying again. She's definitely fully waking up, as we watch on the monitor as she usually sits or stands in her crib. I finally caved and nursed her (which I had just done at midnight two hours earlier) and she went back to sleep for another 4 hours. I'm pretty sure she was still awake when I put her back in her crib, so I really don't think it's that she's constantly expecting to get nursed back to sleep.

Any ideas as to what is causing her to keep waking up every few minutes until I nurse her? We'd like to get down to 1 feeding per night, which is currently very rare.

Re: 10 month old night waking questions

  • It kind of sounds to me like your LO has your number ;) My DD has been waking a couple of times in the night lately too (no idea why, very unusual). She puts herself back to sleep after playing for a while (never cries). Last night she played for AN HOUR. Ugh. But we never went in because we knew she would just cry if she saw us, then we left again. We also didn't want her to get used to the middle of the night attention. She was safe and seemed happy so we left her alone until she went back to sleep (while studying her every move through the video monitor, haha).

  • My LO does the same exact thing. Nurses 2-4x a night and it's the only way to get him back to sleep most of the time. He also puts himself to sleep at bedtime and is frequently awake when done nursing at night.  I'm not sure what is going on as this has been happening since he was about 5 months old. I'm at my breaking point now though and am weaning him as I haven't been able to figure it out in the last 5 months.

Yep, sounds exactly like us. I am pretty close to the breaking point too. Thinking about night weaning, at the very least. I'd like to keep BFing a while longer if I can, but I am exhausted to the core.

  • I agree with PPs. A couple months ago we had a similar problem. Lucia started waking once at night, but after a few weeks she was waking every 30 min from about 3:30 til morning. She knew we would keep coming in, so made herself wake up. Like PP we just had to stop going in. After a couple days she stopped waking. Now we watch her on monitor, but after bedtime never go in her room unless there is a serious problem.
