Going Under

DS has been in the "big boy tub" for a few months now. He loves it. He is fascinated with water. So much so, that he has been trying to put his face in it. The first few times he did it, I pulled him back out of it. I know that I shouldn't panic, and I stayed calm, but I don't like him going under!

Yesterday, he started doing it again. He would take in a big breath, put his lips on the water, and blow out. He does this with his sippy cup, too, making a raspberry sound. I think at one point, he was trying to drink the bath water.

Has your LO tried to go underwater yet? What would/did you do?

Re: Going Under

  • Oh my gosh yes! They both like to "Try" to dive forward to go into the water! It really scares me and I have to tell DH when he bathes them to keep an extra eye on that.... I'm not really sure what to do besides hold them tight as I try to wash them lol

  • I am still using the baby tub.  When we went to the swimming pool in November, the pool was scary to Evelyn.  It took me forever just to get her to accept getting her legs in.  Cant wait to see how the big tub goes.

Our tub has a slow leak, and he'll do it in just a couple of inches of water. I can't get over how much he'll fold himself in half just to get at it! Fortunately at that depth, he's not going to hurt himself as much.

  • My LO just started trying to do this too.  Last night she put her mouth in the water and blew bubbles.  The next time she forgot to close her mouth and took in some water and coughed.  I let her explore the water but am there to pull her up if needed.  So far she hasn't put her whole head under.

I had DD underwater in swim class at 5.5m old.  It is OK for them to go under.  You can encourage the raspberries thing - that is actually a good swimming skill!

What the teach at our swim school is to get them to go under forehead first - it creates a pocket of air in the airway vs. flodding it instantly.  It give a kid a few extra seconds in a drowning situation.

IMO, let your babe explore water (with close adult supervision of course) - maybe he will love to swim.

That's the delicate balance that I'm trying to find, which is why I let him submerge a little more yesterday.
