When will this stop?

I posted a few days back about how my DD started out having a bad cold/flu/upper respiratory infection with high fevers over Christmas. After a dr's appt and a trip to urgent care it was discovered that she had a middle ear infection and they put her on antibiotics. So fevers stopped and she is well...back to her normal self. Then yesterday afternoon, all of a sudden she has this itchy rash on her hands and feet and a little of what looks like prickly rash up her legs and arms. I have an appt with her pedi again today to have it checked out but I am at a loss. Is it a reaction to the amoxicillin that she's been taking for 6 days now? Is it just her body fighting off the original virus? A new virus? Contact irritation? Eczema? I just feel so frustrated and stressed out. I want my baby to be better!

Re: When will this stop?

  • DD had an ear infection a few months ago and the antibiotics cleared it up, though after about a week she developed a rash all over her body. Pedi said if it was an allergy it would have occurred sooner, and it is only a concern if it breaks the blood vessels when you push on the bumps. She said it's usually a side effect of the antibiotics but not an allergic reaction. DD's wasn't itchy though.
  • How long has she been on the antibiotics?

I had an allergic reaction to some antibiotics growing up. This does sound a bit similar. Can you call her pedi?

    I'm sorry.

  • I have called her pedi...I'm bringing her in this afternoon. This is day 7 of antibiotics so I feel like this would have happened sooner. I don't know. I hope that's all it is...it's the easiest solution.
  • Ds is allergic to amoxicilin and his symptoms were round welt type bumps. I would say the size of a nickel. However, he didn't show signs of a reaction the first time he was on it. So, the theory of it showing right away isn't necessarily the case.

You know, they do sort of look like that. There are some smaller bumps but the largest ones are a about nickel-sized, slightly raised and red.

    Sounds like a reaction.
  • I get a rash like that from sulfa based anitboitics... it took almost a week before the reaction showed up.

This.  I was on amox last year for an ear infection and didn't get a reaction until a few days after I started to take it.  I've also taken it as a young kid too, and not one reaction until now.  My eyes got puffy and itched, my whole body itched.  My lips puffed up and I looked like a grouper.  I got what felt like knots on my hands and feet and could hardly walk.  GL.  Hope LO gets better.
