Parenting after a Loss

Birth control not working.

I'm mostly a lurker but I thought I'd post today and see if anyone is going through the same thing. I have tried two bc pills and am still bleeding more than I should be. I was on lo lo estrin for 3 months and getting a period twice a month. Dr switched me to ortho tri lo. This is my first month on this and I have bled all month. I am taking the pill at the same time every day. I am miserable. I don't want to try mirena or nuvaring. I want to take the pill. Any suggestions? I was on lo estrin before we were ttc and it worked great. I have an appt next mon. But just wanted some input.

Re: Birth control not working.

  • In the past I never had any problems with bc pills but since DS was born my body just isn't handling it the same.  My OB put me on Lo Lo Estrin as well and I had a ton of break through bleeding.  Between AF and when the break through bleeding started I had maybe a 5 day break?  Plus I was having alot of other symptoms I didn't have the last time I was on it (headaches, nausea, loss of appetite, etc.).  DH and I talked and since we're going to TTC Baby #2 sometime in June/July we're just going to use condoms until then.  I hope your OB can figure out something that works for you!

  • I went through a time late 2008 where I bled for months on end. They had me try different pills. Mircette, not sure of spelling, got it the lightest ...but it didn't stop. Ended up being fibroids that needed removal. Hopefully it isn't anything like that for you, but in case trying other pills doesn't help I wanted you to know there are other non scary explanations.

  • If you are not BF, Yasmin has helped a lot with my periods.  They got super heavy after DS when I quit BF.  I'm on the generic Ocella.

I agree with PP about looking into other reasons for the bleeding besides BC pills.  Fibroid removal surgery actually isn't that bad and the modern methods don't hurt fertility (I had 2 fibroids removed 1.5 months ago; I had to not pick up LO for a week but that was the hardest part.  We can TTC as soon as 6 months after the surgery if we choose).

How do they find out if there are fibroids? ultrasound?
