NTTTC - Job Related: Commuting Ladies

Hi all, hope everyone is having a fabulous weekend!

I have a random question for you and am just curious if I'm really over thinking this commute thing!

If you were given the opportunity to make $10,000.00 more a year would you take the new job, provided that you knew in advance it would increase your commute time two hours each day? (one hour each way)

Am I being silly? My girlfriends are all anti-commuting, so they think no way. I'm more like, yeah commuting sucks, but money is nice... lol

  • For 10,000 more. Absolutely! I used to travel an hour and ten minutes each way. Good luck with whatever you decide.

  • Depends what is more important to you...time or money. For me, time is more important. I used to work all the time, picking up extra hours weekly. Then I realized time was flying by and life is too short. I love being home with my DH and our furry kids! They make me happier than that extra money ever did.

  • I would so make the commute!!!  For both jobs I have had I had to drive at least 1 hour to work one way and it was so worth it!  I kind of liked the drive!  I got to relax, listen to some music and drink my coffee on the way there and then it gives you some time to decompress when driving back home :)  I would definitely take it.

  • No way. 10k/year increase would basically cover your increased wear and tear on your car/gas and you'd have far less time to spend with future LO's in the evenings. I commute an hour each way already and it makes evening stuff dinner, laundry very rushed and chaotic. Not to mention, I think everyone's time is more valuable than an extra 40 hrs a month in the car.

This. When you think about 10,000 spread out over a year and the extra gas money and car maintenance, it doesn't seem worth it. Even more than that, I would much rather have 2 extra hours a day (40/month!) at home. That's me though, good luck with whatever you decide:)

Totally agree with this. I work from home the majority of time now and if I was offered more money for commuting all the time and spending more time away from home I wouldn't take it. The extra quality time with my DH and dogs is much more important to me than the money! Also I agree about the for car repairs, gas and general deterioration of your car would probably equal the extra 10k or close to it in the long run.

  • Thank you ladies for your insight! I think what I can't get my head around is the fact that right now my commute is only ten minutes. Time is very important to me and the fact that it'll mean 40 extra hours a month kind of blows my mind :/  I am going to go ahead with the interview and see what they offer. They supposedly have good benefits. If they have full IF coverage (ha, one could hope) then that would definitely be a deal breaker haha!

  • No way. Losing 2 hours a day of my life is not worth 10k (which isn't that big of an increase at all after taxes). Also, is it extra traffic or just miles? Traffic drives me absolutely insane and I am in a horrible mood by the time I get home.

    30k and I would listen.

Extra miles + traffic driving. I drove the route yesterday just to see how long it'd take (Sat. afternoon, little traffic) and it was still pretty horrible.

  • My commute is already an hour each way in normal traffic, nevermind rain, snow or fog. And at least once a week there is an accident (not weather related) that causes it to be longer. That being said, I would not add another hour onto that commute. Plus DH and I commute together to save money. We work 15 minutes apart if I got a new job another hour away I would have to drive alone which would end up costing more.

However, you said you only commute 10 minutes to work right now, so I would entertain the idea. It would depend on more then $10000 though. Benefits and opportunity for growth would have to be considered as well.

  • Hmm, tough one. I live in So Cal where it is like an hour to go anywhere on a weekday morning, haha.  Super envious of your 10 min commute!  But for me it would depend on all other factors--the % increase of your salary & the need for the increase, the benefits, flexibility for when you have a family, potential for growth if desired, potential for significant raises, etc. Just my two cents.  Good luck!  Definitely doesn't hurt to find out all the details!
