Post-partum foot/ankle swelling

My DD is six days old now.  The day after she was born I started noticing a lot more swelling in my feet and ankles. I never had any of this while pregnant, so I was a little surprised. The doctor/nurses at the hospital said this was totally normal, but I am wondering if anyone else had this happen and how long PP did it last?

Re: Post-partum foot/ankle swelling

  • It happened to me both times. The first time it settled down within a week or two; this time it was a bit quicker (maybe 4 or 5 days). It's basically just fluid. If you notice that your skin doesn't bounce back when you push it, that's something to talk to a doc about. Drink lots of water!

  • I had a lot of swelling in my legs and feet from the fluid that was coming in through my IV. The worst of it was no more than a week and still had some a couple of weeks later, but was gone after that. I am back to normal now!

  • Yup had the same thing, it kinda freaked me out! My feet and calves were huge and it was very uncomfortable. I walked, drank lots of water, and put them up when I could. It was gone by week 2.
  • I only ever swell post-partum.  I swelled a lot worse with the boys.  My wrists are still affected by it and my boys are a month old.  Drink plenty of water and keep your feet up when you can to lessen the pain on you feet.

Ditto to no swuelling until post pardom. Week after discharge was closer to wearing my regular sneakers rather than slip ons. Am now almost able to put on wedding band ... still am a little too big for it to be comfortable.

  • Same here. The foot and ankle swelling only occurred postpartum. It took about a week for the crazy sausage feet to go away. I still have some swelling but I can't tell by looking at my feet. I only know when I try things on.

  • I've been swollen since about month three of pregnancy, but while I was at the hospital one of the nurses told me sometimes your swelling will peak in the week or two after you have the baby, and then go away.  She actually told me to expect it to get worse before it gets better and that was normal.

  • I had swollen feet like crazy and legs, from the IV fluids. It peaked at 1 week PP and then got better. I'm feeling fairly normal now (10 days PP). The nurses warned me about it and said it's hard for your body to eliminate fluid from lower extremities. I noticed I was really sweaty for a few days, especially while sleeping, and I think that was one way my body got rid of the fluid. Good luck!

  • Mine was bad this time around for a good 7-9 days. Drink a lot of water. I know it sounds silly, but it helps. Also don't be surprised if you get the chills or sweats too. All so fun, the post-partum stuff!
