Alimentum to Elecare

Has anyone else had to make this switch?  We're still trying to work out what is wrong with my LO's tummy - whether it's just ultra sensitive or if he has an allergy.  We went from Gentleease, which has partially hydrolyzed proteins, to Alimentum which has extensively hydrolyzed proteins, and now to Elecare which is amino acid based, and our last resort!  If you use Elecare, how long until you noticed a positive difference in your LO?  I am so ready for my little guy to be the happy baby I know he wants to be.  He is five months now, and still cries more often than not with a crampy tummy.  It is really devastating to see him smiling, playing with a toy, and then screaming in agony.  Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.  Next step is a GI appointment, but we have to wait until the end of the month.

  • We just made the switch (very regretfully) to Elecare on Friday.  I was EBF and tried eliminating dairy, then dairy and soy, then on to a full elimination diet of just turkey, rice/potatoes, zucchini, apples and pears.  He was GREAT with that!  After just four days, he was a MUCH happier and much less gassy baby, and diapers were blood free and only slightly mucousy- I really thought we were in the clear.  So after another week of wonderfullness, I tried adding foods back into my diet.  As soon as I did, the mucus kicked up into high gear again.  I was so incredibly upset.  But I just couldn't live on the six aforementioned foods any longer.  After lots of tears and mind changing, we've decided Elecare was the best option.

His poops are once again returning to normal (I think anyway, not sure what's exactly "normal" for an amino acid based formula stool).  But, I don't think he's eating nearly enough.  He is hating it right now and will only take an ounce or two at a time.  Twice I've gotten four in him at one sitting.  Did your doc say anything about this being more filling, that LO would need less of it?  Because I think he's averaged 20 ounces the last two days.  And he's in the 75th percentile for height and 50th for weight, so it's not like he's very tiny and that's why he wouldn't want more.

Best of luck to you!  Sorry if this wasn't that helpful, I'm all over the place still emotionally from stopping BFing.

  • Thanks salty for all the advice and for telling your story. I am such a wreck about it. I knew I loved BFing, but I didn't think stopping would hit so hard.
