Help! serious constipation

Hi Ladies!  I have been taking zofran daily for severe nausea/vomiting.  Now I am severely constipated!  I have not had a bowel movement in a week.  I have tried prune juice the past couple of days with no relief.  Is there anything else safe I can take?  I don't want to bother an on call doctor with this, but I am really uncomfortable!  any help would be appreciated!

  • Increase your fiber and drink LOTS of water!

  • That early on in the pregnancy you should be fine to take any standard stool softener, and probably most gentle laxatives. When you get later into the pregnancy you want to stick to just stool softeners, hydration, and fiber, as most of the heavier laxatives can cause abdominal cramps and have a potential to stimulate contractions.

  • Colace is a lifesaver for me. Just make sure you get the one without the laxative in it.

  • I took Colace stool softener, drank a lot of water, and increased fiber.

  • I've been taking 2 colace a day this entire pregnancy, but it's more preventative. I don't think it will help you at this point. I'd recommend miralax and a glycerine suppository..,unpleasant but better than ending up in the er for impaction. Good luck and I hope you feel better!!

  • I took colace daily while pg and continued for a few days after delivery.

  • Ughh seriously I had the same and I swear up and down that pooping was worse than labor lol - so embarrassing but I ended up in the ER because of it.  If it gets really bad you could use a glycerin suppository or a non-laxative enema (fleet enema) at home - that's all they did in the ER then sent me home with more of the same.  Good luck!  It is awful!

Thanks for sharing!  I actually did BOTH tonight after talking to my friend who is a nurse.  The suppository didn't do anything, and I only got a little result from the enema.  I am trying to avoid the ER because I know that is pretty much all they will do, and it is embarrassing!  I am slightly worried about an impaction, but praying that things will keep moving.  Did you get big results with the enema or did you have to keep using them?

Ugh I went through all this too. No BM for two weeks because of zofran I tried two different enemas and 2 over the counter suppositories. I ended up going to the ER and they gave me medicine can't remember the name it was a real thick liquid that I took with a suppository and got some movement. It was terrible though the cramping was incredibly painful but it helped. They had me take it again the next day and finally everything worked. It may be worth it to ask your dr or go to the ER save yourself the embarassment and don't have them do another enema though because if the over the counter ones aren't working then theirs won't do much either. The good news is i never had to go through it again make sure you take colace pretty regularly once this gets taken care of. Good luck!

When you haven't gone in a week you will definitely get big results at some point haha ;)   But no, the enema didn't work in the ER and I cried when they sent me home saying there wasn't much else they could do.  It had been 10 days for me and they said I wasn't impacted but it still didn't work.  I think later that day or the next day after using a combination of all those things I was finally able to go.  If you go in at least they could tell you if that is a factor?  I feel so bad for you it is absolutely miserable and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!  I think they also gave me milk of magnesia (which may be the thick liquid pp mentioned?)  Once you do get it taken care of definitely stay on top of it with colace, fiber, etc. because it will happen over and over if you don't!
