Baby Names

Thoughts on baby names

We have 2 weeks until our gender scan. I would like to hear people's thoughts on our names. We have really been struggling for a girl but the boys name was picked out before we were pregnant.

Wesley James
Poppy Isabella

We have been calling our pregnancy poppy and since we both think its a girl we are having trouble with a name. We both don't think we could call her anything but poppy.
Thanks for your thoughts!

Re: Thoughts on baby names

  • Neither are my style but I think Wesley James is a solid name. Poppy is to much of a nn for my liking. I like Isabella.

  • I love the boy name, but as far as Poppy, I think it's more of a nickname rather than a first name.

  • I love the name Poppy! I just don't care for the MN.

Wesley James is a nice choice. :)

  • Love Wesley James ...

Poppy Isabella is so NMS .... it's too frilly, little girly.  Can you imagine when she's an adult?

  • I would consider Isabella as a name but my hubby says twilight ruined it. Name choosing is so hard.
  • Love Wesley James.

Not a fan of Poppy, that's what we call our Grandfathers. If you love it, then go for it- but have you considered Piper as an alternative? It sounds more like a name to me.

  • I like the boy name....my dad is James Wesley but I like the way you have it more.

    I don't like Poppy.

  • Poppy seems like a nn for Penelope or Philippa to me. It would be cute on a toddler but very odd on a professional adult. I do like Wesley James very much though!

  • I think Poppy is becoming more common as a given name in the UK, so you might be on the front end of a trend for here (some names cross the pond, some don't)- but to my ear it sounds too  much like a nickname. Can you come up with a more formal name (for resumes, etc.) and use Poppy as a nickname.

    Penelope? Phoebe?

  • I love Poppy as a nn for Penelope.

I also like Pippa, for Phillippa. Very elegant.

This, and I also think of grandfathers for Poppy more than girls or especially women. I'd use it as a NN for a longer name if you really love it.

  • Wesley is ok. Nms.

Poppy is adorable but I would make it a nickname for something more formal.

  • Wesley James is nice.  I'm personally not a huge fan of Wesley but there is nothing wrong with it at all.

Poppy seems like a NN not a full name to me and Isabella is pretty but overused.

  • I definitely agree with the PPs re: Poppy- I'd use it as a nickname for a longer, more sophisticated first name. I like the suggestion of Penelope, or even Phoebe.

Wesley is NMS but a fine name choice.

  • I guess I am in the minority here, but I love the name Poppy. I know a family member in England recently named one of her twins this, so I agree it is becoming more popular in the UK. I picture an adult woman named Poppy to be a cool, hip, independent woman with a killer haircut and good taste in clothes.
  • I like both names.  I do agree with some of the PPs to an extent though, Poppy does sound a little bit nick-namey.  But it also seems to be on the upswing in terms of popularity, so you could be a trend setter.

  • I actually really like them both! Poppy has always been a GP name of mine, and Wesley is very nice.
  • I like your choices, but I think of Poppy as a NN for Penelope.
