Cloth Diapering

CD Service?

I'm early in my pregnancy with my first. I've been starting my research on CDs, and my mom sent me a link to a CD service in the area. Apparently this place delivers the diapers and picks them up once a week.

They say that they sell pro-wrap covers for $6 each if you want to buy those. They'll sell you a 54quart daiper pail for $20--then they will drop off a new pail liner and deodorizer disk with each fresh diaper delivery. They drop off in increments of 10 diapers a week up to 120 diapers--cost is about 22 cents a diaper (so 40 diapers a week would cost $8.52).

So here are my questions:
Does anyone use a CD Service? What do you like about it? Or what don't you like about it if you stopped using one?
Is it weird to use CDs that another baby has worn?
Does this seem worth it from the financial aspect?
What kinds of questions should I ask these people if I consider going this route?

One cool thing is that the organization that's doing this does great community work like adult day care programs, assisting individuals with brain injuries become independent, & works with area employers to employ disabled adults in the area.

ETA: after scrolling down for the 3rd time through this board, I finally saw someone else asked about CD service earlier. Duh--where is my brain? I do have a few specific questions in here though, so I'll leave it up in case anyone has additional wisdom to impart or answers to my questions. Thanks ladies--sorry for pretty much double-posting!

Re: CD Service?

  • The only questions I can address are the financial and used diaper ones.

22 cents a diaper is more expensive than some disposables. During the newborn phase you will need about 100 diapers per week. (I'm not joking. During the first month with DD we averaged 15 diapers per DAY).

So, it will cost the same or more than disposables (more because you have to buy covers - though $6 for Prorap is a good price. I loved that cover when DD was a newborn, but could never get a good fit with the larger sizes). I cloth diaper for the cost savings, so this would not be an option I would choose. Laundering my own diapers at home has not been a burden in the least and we started with cloth as soon as we got home from the hospital.

I don't find it weird to diaper with cloth diapers another baby has worn. I bought all of my newborn stash used. It was not a big deal at all and I even sold the diapers to another mama when I was done with them.

  • Dh and I toyed with the idea of a service for ft or just pt use for deep cleaning every month or so. However,.since we started, I haven't had any issues with washing the cd's. My LO is almost 4 months and most of her diapes look brand new still. If you are thinking of the service for the ick factor of washing yourself, like we were, don't be worried. Once you get started and into a good routine, its very easy!

Also, I believe that our local cd service is 20 per month for pickup and rental. I agree with the pp that if your main want for cd is cost savings, the service may not be your best bet.
