Cloth Diapering

Recommend your diaper cream

DD has VERY sensitive skin. She get's diaper rash at the smallest thing it seems. CD's help greatly with this but it still does happen. Especially if I am not the one to change her diaper because other people seem to forget to put some cream on to prevent this from happening. Anyway, I've been using EMAB and love it (LOVE LOVE LOVE) even though I didn't like that it started out smooth and creamy and for some reason turned quite grainy after about 4 months and I couldn't get it back to its soft consistency. The grainy bits are just annoying to pick off once it's rubbed on to prevent more irritation. I'm not sure if this is common for this brand, or a fluke.

Anywho, I was about to order more but then thought maybe I'd ask the board what you are all using. I need something good not only for maintenence but for clearing up bad rashes as well, easy on sensitive skin, and obviously CD friendly (I don't want to bother with a disposable liner).

EMAB is all I know so maybe I love it for that reason? Either convince me to stay or change my mind. What do you ladies recommend?

  • Melt your emab in the microwave for like 45 seconds, swirl it a bit and stick it in the freezer for an hour. It will be smooth as silk!

Oh and we use CJs Butter in addition to emab. The melting trick actually comes from them. They have lots of scents, though we only use unscented or the natural essential oil ones. I Iike the orange a lot. It's hard to go wrong with either brand, but CJs is cheaper unless you're getting the emab through a coop.
  • I have a few different diaper creams that I like. I have ca baby and burts bees for regular diaper cream and then I also have a burts bees salve that works really well. It's actually like an al over salve, I believe, but I just use it n my LO's tush. Every time she is a little red, it clears her up right away. I really like it! I think that the salve is cd safe, but I use a simple fleece liner that I sewed up quick anyways, just in case.

Ps: in case that's not the actual name, the salve is sold in a jar with the other burts bees baby items at target :D

Really? I was worried it would seperate if I microwaved it. I tried putting it in a bowl of hot water, but it only stayed creamy for like a day then was really grainy again. I wonder why it did that, and only after a few months of use.

  • The natural creams are made without chemical additives to control the consistency /suspension of particles. I've heard this is completely normal to have it turn grainy. I would try the microwave trick to melt all the particles.

    This is what CJ's says:

"Shea butter will sometimes become grainy due to the heat during transit in the summer or because of temperature fluctuations. It?s not a problem, unless you don?t like it. If you?d prefer your BUTTer to be creamy, just remove the cap and microwave it for about 45-60 seconds (standing up in a microwave-safe cup if it?s a tube). Then replace the cap and shake the bottle well or stir well if it?s a jar or tub. Place it in the freezer to re-harden and it should be smooth and creamy again. Melting the BUTTer melts the crystals in the shea butter and cooling it quickly in the freezer keeps the crystals from reforming."

I can tell you that I've done that with my emab and CJ's and it really does put it back the way it's "supposed" to be. It didn't hurt it, just made it super smooth!

  • I really like my CJ's. I use the stick for general maintenance because it's easy and mess-free, and I break out the tub for when things get serious, so I can get more on there.

  • I swear they work better when I change it up and use a different kind every few days, otherwise it seems like one stops working after a while. My favorite is Grandma El's, but we also use CJ's, EMAB, and plain ol' coconut oil.
