Cloth Diapering

did any of you have to switch preferences once LO was born?

I love the look and idea of AIOs... I don't even want to look at or try out any others, but am I setting myself up for failure?

Did anyone have their heart set on one type of CDs, and have to switch for another?

Re: did any of you have to switch preferences once LO was born?

  • I thought that I would love aios for the nb stage and os aplix pockets thereafter.

However, for nb stage I ended up preferring fitteds and double gusset covers

And while I do love os aplix pockets for night time. I prefer os snap ai2s for daytime.

I was in love with Grovia AI2 while I was pregnant and was gifted all of it that was on my registry. I also received a few BG 4.0 as gifts. I wanted to ease into cloth so I reached for the 4.0 first and never looked back. I have an entire stash of Grovia that is untouched.
I've tried to unload it but I don't want to give it away so I'm my daughters closet it sits. I'm hoping to maybe use it closer to potty learning.
I always suggest a diaper trial when people ask about cloth. That way you get a feel for what you like and what fits baby best.

  • I have some BG AIO and thought that they would be my favorite cd because everything is right there and they are sooo easy. However, I actually like them the least, mostly because of their bulk. My LO is only 4 months, so while the aio aren't my favorite now, I think that I will like them more when she grows into them more. I also have both Charlie banana and Alva pockets and like them most for the day. For bedtime, I like and only use my flips because I can pad the heck out of them and don't have any leak issues after a long night.

Im not really a huge proponent of "try a million different diapers and see what you like best", but I would suggest trying a few different types...
  • I thought I'd only use pockets. Although I do use them, I prefer natural fibers. I really ended up preferring prefolds or fitteds with covers. I also like trying out new stuff to see what works for us. It's fun, and fairly easy to re sell what you don't want.

  • Yes. I had my heart set on pockets first then I ventured into trying the flip system. Then prefolds with covers. Now some fitteds for nighttime.

I never wanted to do AIOs because I'm too impatient for the drying time. BIls girlfriend bought us a few diapers for Christmas and the Swaddlebees OS Simplex was one of them, I love it. I still hate the drying time but its a nice diaper. I bought a few more.

Also, I thought I would hate Fuzzibunz Elites until I got one as a freebie with an order. Now it's most of my stash.

I recommend trying a few. Pick a couple that seem like you might like and try them. If you hate them, you can sell them or keep the as back up.

  • I started with prefolds at the nb stage and thought I would move onto pockets, but I'm a prefold lover through and through. I use Flips and Grovia covers, but not their inserts because prefolds are awesome. I use a few pockets for grandparents, etc. and fitteds for night.
  • Me too. After watching cloth diapering 101 on youtube, I was all for fitteds. I scored a great deal on a full set of mother-ease OS fitteds on CL and thought I was good to go. Then I saw some BG XS AIOs on CL, and the seller also had a dozen KL0 and prefolds with various covers. I loved the BG AIOs once his cord fell off.

When he finally grew into the mother-ease, I realized they were way too bulky for day time. They make great night-time diapers, but I kept using the prefolds (he had already outgrown the BG and KLs), and picked up some flip covers when he outgrew the covers we had. In fact, I'm still using the infant prefolds that were part of that original newborn set, although they are getting hard to snappi. Before I started, I didn't think I could handle prefolds. Now, I'm getting into flats.

We also have some aplix pockets and g-diapers (stuffed with pad folded flat) for MH to use since he prefers velcro and doesn't want to mess with folding/snappis.

  • I thought I'd love AIOs for the newborn phase, but I almost hate them!  I NEVER have a leak using prefolds and double-gusseted covers.  But I've had a few leaks in all of my newborn AIOs (have Bumgenius, Thirsties & Swaddlebees newborn AIOs).  I don't trust them!  Maybe I will feel differently as my son grows out of the runny newborn poo phase and his little legs bulk up a little?

  • Yep, I thought I would love the BG XS AIOs so I bought a ton at a Cotton Babies "Garage Sale" for cheap. I HATED them! They started leaking when he was about 2 weeks old because they weren't absorbent enough. I also thought I would be too intimidated to use prefolds, so I just bought a dozen for back up. We ended up loving our GMD Workhorse fitteds and prefolds! In regards to prefolds, my DH actually said "oh, that's all you do? I can do that." Said by a man who had only changed pocket diapers from DS 1! Buy a variety of styles and you'll figure out pretty quickly what works best for you and baby. GL!

  • Absolutely. I thought I was was going to only want to use snaps. It turns out that I way prefer aplix and I get a much better fit with it. Also, I thought that I would hate stuffing pockets, and only wanted to look at hybrids (AI2s), but I love pockets now and don't care about stuffing.

I really recommend doing a diaper trial. That way you can try out a bunch of different things and see what you like.

  • Absolutely. My diaper preference has changed several times as DD has grown and become more mobile.

The bulk of my stash is prefolds/covers and pockets, plus fitteds for naps and overnight. I like not having all the same kind of diaper. I ended up selling my AIOs because they took twice as long to dry as anything else in my stash. Plus DD is a heavy wetter so I was having to add extra absorbency anyway. When considering the dry time they were less convenient for us than pockets.
