Birth control

What's been your experience with your birth control since having your LO? I was on the mini-pill until about 3 months ago when I got my first period and went on regular bcp. I had off and on bleeding with the first pack with a period during the placebo week. This past month I had a day or so of very light bleeding during one of the active pill weeks, but nothing since. I am on the placebo week now and haven't got a period yet. I'm wondering if this is just my body getting used to the hormones or if I should POAS. I've had to POAS like 3 times since LO was born due to me needing reassurance that I wasn't knocked up. Anyone else have a similar experience with your bc?

Re: Birth control

  • I was on the mini-pill for about a year and my periods were just whenever.  It took about 2 months on the real pill for my period to go back to normal.  I would say your body is still getting regulated to the pill.

  • Good to know! I went ahead and POAS right after I posted because I was being a chicken about testing. I am ready for my hormones to get back to "normal", whatever that means.

ETA: the test was negative, forgot to put that!

I was on mirena before lo and after and I love it. No periods, no pms, nothing. It rocks my socks off.

I love when I read about people who love it because that's my plan for after DD2 right now.

  • I'm not on any form of hormonal contraception, but my job is based in reproductive physiology.  It's normal for you to experience breakthrough bleeding when transitioning from a progesterone-only pill to a combination pill.  Like you said, it's your body adjusting to the changing hormones.  And FWIW, there is no medically necessary reason to have a monthly bleed, so you might want to ask your OB/GYN about skipping the placebo week if you don't want to have a period.

For serious? Dealing with periods for the 10 plus years I was on the pill was unnecessary? ::eggs family doctor's house:: I didn't get my first pp af until after I weaned and switched to a low hormone "regular" bcp. Things were all over the place and I had periods every 2 weeks or so until I switched to the full hormone bcp. Then I had one normal cycle with no breakthrough bleeding before stopping bcp and starting to TTC. After baby 2, I will not be going back on hormonal bc. I hate it.

Well, I would definitely consult a doctor, but that's what the literature says:)  BC pills are tricky because there are so many variables to troubleshoot (e.g. estrogen amount, type of progestin, placebo week) when trying to treat breakthrough bleeding.  I'm not sure how up on the latest research most doctors are.

  • I did the pill for a few months. When my free samples ran out we just used the pull and pray. We knew we would be trying for number 2 soon and I know it's not the best method, but I have textbook cycles so we went with it.

After DS2, I have no idea. I got pregnant with DS1 on the pill, then add BFing, I don't think the pill is a good idea. I'm not comfortable with an IUD either. We definitely don't want anymore babies soon so I better figure something out!
