what does vinegar do?

I feel so stupid even asking this. I've heard of people using it in rinses, but what does it actually do?

  • I haven't really used it w/ my CDs...only once or twice... but I think it's usually as a fabric softener, and for odor control.

It has disinfecting qualities too, but is diluted a lot in a wash cycle.... does it still help with that?!? Maybe someone else can jump in with the answer...

  • It's acidic, so people use it to neutralize a base (ammonia) to turn into water. It can be problematic for some people.

  • It helps with the pH balance and neutralizes ammonia. Plus it works as a fabric softener, and makes the diapers softer! I also use it in my regular laundry for the softening.

  • If the OP doesn't mind my jumping in with a related vinegar question, for those of you who do use it, how much do you add to a full load?

I put a small a small amount in my downy ball so it just comes out in the rinse cycle.

  • So you want the vinegar to stay in? And not be rinsed out?
