Cold remedies for 2 year olds?

My daughter has come down with a runny nose/sneezing/cough.  She is 2 and I'm thinking about taking her to the doc tomm but is there some remedies for this I can do tonight.  Looking for something to dry up her runny nose at least.

Re: Cold remedies for 2 year olds?

  • Poor thing. I'd try a humidifier as well as some Vicks vapor rub.

  • suction (if you dont own a good one I recommend the nosefrida, sounds gross but works amazingly),  humidifier, vicks on the chest/upper back/soles of feet (if you buy into the feet thing, I always figure it can't hurt :) ).

If she has only had it for a day or two,  your pedi is unlikely to do anything for her except recommend the same types of things.

  • Did you use regular or baby vicks?

  • My girls both have colds right now. We had humidifiers running in their rooms, Baby Vicks on their feet and chests, and used the boogie sucker on DD2 before bed since she hasn't quite got the hang of blowing her nose. DD1 also has a cough, so we gave her "tea" before bed - honey stirred into hot water - to help soothe her throat and hopefully calm the cough for a bit.

I heard that one worked well. We have this:

  • I'm not sure there is anything you can do for a cold other than offer comfort for the symptoms. I would use a saline nose spray to declog the nose, and use the suction sparingly (after LO gets a nosebleed, you are reluctant to keep sucking snot out). I think the saline spray does more good any way. I haven't used vicks yet, but I'm sure it can't hurt. Also, Johnson & Johnson has a bath wash for colds that smells really good (eucalyptus, I don't remember). That in a warm bath with the bathroom door closed helps too. I have a mister (not a traditional humidifier) that I can put essential oils into. I usually put lavander in it for a relaxing aroma, but you can put peppermint or eucalyptus and it will help clear the nose (I've used it for a sinus infection). You can get the mister at Whole Foods where the essential oils are.

  • For the cough/sore throat my ped reccomended a spoon full of honey at bedtime. It really worked well. I used it myself since I am pg and I can say it works well.

  • Ever since my daughter started daycare, she has suffered from runny nose, cough or sore throat.  Dr recommends what everyone else has - saline spray, Vicks, humidifier & steamy bath helps loosen mucous as well.  Since she really doesn't  like to blow her nose, it's easier for me to get her to let me get some of the mucous out at that time.
  • I use baby Vicks. Not really sure what the difference is...maybe just a little weaker? I would also highly recommend a warm mist vaporizer (we have the Vicks brand one). They are totally safe and the warm mist does a good job of helping with coughing and congestion. We have been using these two products for three nights now.
  • Oh, and we do the 1/2 tsp of honey, too. That seems to help a little. I also highly recommend purchasing Dr. Schulze's Air Detox. We get the bathroom all steamed up and spray this in the air. Taking the LO in there for at least 10 minutes seems to help.
