Tucks/Witch Hazel pads

how necessary would you say it is to have witch hazel pads? does it really speed up the healing time? where do I find these? (are they in a special aisle or are they with the period pads?) or would you just buy regular pads and pour your own witch hazel on top?

My SIL and friends that are moms swear by the Tucks pads.  I haven't heard of doing the other so I'm curious.  One of my friends is an L&D nurse and she said to get Tucks.

They are only available online, right?

Tucks?  Nope, I saw some in our grocery store.  I'm pretty sure Target has them too.

what section would they be in?

  • I had a second degree tear and the hospital I delivered at gave me a package of witch hazel pads. I thought they soothed me a lot. They suggested putting them in the freezer at home and then after going to the bathroom putting one on my tear to get some relief, it was amazing!

  • omg, i used these things for days after giving birth. they were just really soothing. i was extremely sore and had stitches, so I would sit two or three of them in a row on top of my pad. i kept them in the fridge so they'd be cold.

  • and yes, you can get them in the pharmacy section of any drug store. look around the hemorrhoid stuff.

oh so they are just really thin pads, not meant to absorb blood?

  • They can also be found at Costco.

  • I don't know if they speed up healing time, but they were super soothing.  I also highly recommend Depends and one of those hernia donuts.  There is also a cooling spray, I can't remember the name.  I'll check my bathroom and see if I still have it and will report back with the name.

Yeah, they are just thin round pads. Kind of the same size has like a noxema or oxyclean pad if you've ever seen those. Paperthin. They do not absorb blood at all.

Edit: Not oxyclean lol, oxy something, you ladies know what I'm talking about?

  • Loved the Tucks postpartum! They are so soothing.

I sent my DH to get more at Target and he brought home the Up&Up Target brand and we kept them in the fridge. So worth trying.

  • They are sooo worth it! You can find them in almost any store; they are usually by the hemorrhoid products. They really are soothing; especially if you have stitches. The nurses will give you some after you deliver. You just place them in between you and your pad.

  • Best invention ever.  They just cool down your girly bits that feel like they are on fire and throbbing.  Don't use them sparingly either!  But really, one can/container will last you the couple weeks you actually need them.  Plus, they cut down on the smell, because trust me, it ain't pretty ;)

  • I would definitely suggest getting some tucks pads (or store brand witch hazel pads).  It doesn't necessarily speed healing time, but it does provide some relief, especially if you tear.  I had some really bad tearing and stitches and the tucks pads brought a lot of relief.  I used them for a good few weeks.  You can find them pretty much anywhere....target, grocery store, etc.  They are usually in the same spot as hemmoroid cream, etc.

I remember thinking that the first time too.

They're actually made for hemorrhoids so I think they're by the hemorrhoid stuff in any drug store/grocery store etc.  They were really nice especially once you hit the itchy/burny phase (with my stitches).

  • man, I am not scared to give birth at all, but the aftermath sounds horrendous! lol tell me it goes by fast!

  • With DD, mine were given to me at the hospital and my birth center also stocks them. IMO, they are amazing and provided great relief. You could certainly pour your own witch hazel onto pads, but it is much more convenient to just put a tucks pad down there when you are sore, bleeding, and changing pads frequently.

  • I just posted on 3rd tri about the same thing, but just wanted to say I also loved the witch hazel pads.  My routine was to lay out some witch hazel pads on the actual pad and then squirt a line of hemorrhoid cream down the middle to help with swelling.  I healed quickly but I only had a tiny tear (1 internal stitch) so I'm sure that was it more than anything I used afterwards- but it was very soothing.

  • The hospital gave me a whole tub of these as we were leaving with my NB at the time....I think I used one. I didn't need them so I will not be purchasing them for the next baby....

But I did love the pads they gave me at the hospital that had been in the freezer...or they are squeeze and freeze activated.

i'm not going to lie ... it's not pleasant. at least, it wasn't for me. i've had friends who say otherwise (i'm sure there's always exceptions). i wasn't prepared for the afterbirth stuff at all!

I know not everyone liked it but I really liked the ice packs/pads they gave you in the hospital right after I gave birth.  It was one of the only things that seemed to numb/cool the area and make it tolerable for awhile.

  • I saw a pin on pinterest (but didn't pin it b/c I'll have a c-section) of a lady who made her own postpartum pads. She poured witch hazel and aloe vera on an always pad and put them in the freezer so she had them when she got home from the hospital. The hospital usually gives you what you need but this would be AWESOME for when you get home. Of course I tried to find the link/pin and couldn't.

Here is a link of a similar recipe but it's not the original one I came across:
