Natural Birth

Call the Midwife

Anyone else who loves this show?  I received the first season on DVD from my MIL for Christmas and I'm almost through it.  I've really enjoyed it!  It's a reminder of how birth used to be primarily attended by MWs and the docs were only called in for true emergencies.

  • I haven't watched it, although it gets great reviews from my birthworker friends.  I started watching Doc Martin, another English show, and the portrayal there of midwifery was so stereotypically bad that it almost made me stop watching what is otherwise a rather funny, quirky little show (in which most professions are made fun of in some way or another).

I think the portrayal of midwives is very positive in this one.  They are competent, educated, and care a lot about the women they are serving.  The show had some pretty serious situations - breech birth, delivering without any tools, eclampsia, etc. and the midwives on the show used their skills to handle the situations.

  • I love the show and recently read the book!  It is such a moving show and really portrays birth as an emotional event not a medical event.  I will say I wish the author had given more information about her life in the book.  I was dying to know who she married, who delivered her LOs etc.

This is still how birth is in the UK.

  • I loved watching it and so did my hubby.

The skills midwives had and have are incredible. A show like this, just like ER and Grey's Anatomy, wouldn't be nearly as interesting if the majority of the births were normal, straight forward births though. But the fact that these births happened and moms and babies had good outcomes is inspiring.
