Not so much a toddler related question but....

I am just curious to see if anyone here is using an IUD form of BC?

I am looking into either Mirena or the Copper IUD. I have done some research and will talk to my doctor next month but just looking for feedback from people that already have one now or have used one in the past...

Re: Not so much a toddler related question but....

  • I have Mirena. It was put in at the end of July

    Pros:

    I'm not pregnant.

I don't have to remember to take a pill or refill a rx every month.

I don't have periods, just a day or two of spotting once in a while.

    It lasts for 5 years.

    Cons:

I bled for 6 weeks when I first got it.

I have gained 8 pounds since it was put in 4 months ago. *None* of that was during the holidays and my diet hasn't changed.

I have developed cystic acne, and generally acne worse than when I was in high school. I turn 30 in 4 weeks.

I have cramps a lot, and I swear I can feel it in there.

I had to have the strings cut, because DH could feel it every time we had sex.

My depression and anxiety has been less well-controlled since being on it, but still manageable.

Insertion was no big deal, but then, I have had two babies vaginally. It may be worse if you've never delivered a baby vaginally.

If I wasn't still struggling with the need/desire to have one more baby, DH would have had a vasectomy and I wouldn't have to have this. I won't be getting an IUD again.

     GL with your choice!

  • Thanks for the feedback! :)

I have been trying to find a non-hormonal form of BC and the Copper IUD would fit that profile but I had read that the Mirena one only was small doses of it so I thought I'd consider it.

I am guessing the acne and all that would not be an issue with the non-hormonal Copper IUD.

I never even thought about the strings...(weird)

I have also delivered 2 babies vaginally so I am thinking it won't be bad LOL :)

I wish there were more options for guys in the BC department! *sigh*

  • So I had the copper one (Paraguard).  DH hated it - he could feel the strings even after I had them cut.  It also made sex more painful for me.  The first 4 months, I had crazy unpredictable heavy periods.  Then it stabilized out.  But the killer for me was that I got constant yeast infections with it.  Prior to having it inserted, I hadn't had a yeast infection in like 10 years.  I had one almost monthly with it in.  A quick google search showed that IUD's make some women more susceptible to yeast infections, though my MW hadn't ever heard of that.  I had it pulled 3 months ago and haven't had one since!

  • I love my IUD!  No hassle, very little cramping, no bleeding (except for the first couple of weeks).

  • I had a copper IUD for 7 years and really didn't have many complications with it.  I do remember the first couple months I did experience cramping with my periods & my periods were a bit heavier, but it stabilized after that.  I also never got pregnant while I had it in.

It's one of those things where it works for some & not for others.  The only way to know is to actually try it.

Did you have a copper IUD or Mirena?
