Pregnant after 35

confused, annoyed and would love some feedback.

Hi ladies.

I will try to make this short and sweet.  First day of last period was Nov. 21st.  Had my first appt with a new doc that my friend recommended on Monday.  At that point, I thought I was 6w 3d, but he went on to say I was 4 days earlier than that b/c I have a 24 day cycle.  Typically he would not do a trans/v u/s because it would be too early to see anything.  (He also mentioned I had a tilted uterus--not sure what that has to do with anything?)

Anyway, I mentioned I had some cramping on my left side, and since this is my first pregnancy ever I was concerned with ectopic.  He said he would do a quick u/s to make sure all was well before his next appt. It turned out there was a yolk sac, and everything was where it was supposed to be, but after twirling the wand all over he said he didn't see a fetal pole.  And then his whole demeanor changed.  He got quiet, said he was concerned, mumbled something about it being early enough that it will pass by itself.  Talk about confusing the hell out of me.  Then he said he doesn't want to be all "doom and gloom" and told me to come back in 2 weeks.

When I walked out after getting changed, his nurse was acting odd too.  She said I don't need to worry about having bloodwork done until my next u/s in 2.5 weeks.  Are you kidding?  Now I have to wait 2.5 weeks after that whole ordeal?

Has anyone ever experienced this?  I've convinced myself of the worst, of course.  But what a horrible way to handle a new patient!  And now I'm in limbo... is there a fetus?  Was it really too early?  So many questions.  Thanks for any feedback.

:)

  • No personal experience here, though I'd guess it could go either way. But seriously, THAT is the note they leave you hanging on?! For 2 1/2 weeks?! I would find a different provider and/or insist on a scan in a week or so. That just seems like such a cruel way to treat you. You need to know one way or the other.

  • That's pretty early for an OB ultrasound unless you were seeking treatment from an RE. I wouldn't be too concerned, but I would be worried about the lack of direct communication from your OB, that just sounds like poor bedside manner. I'd switch while you still have plenty of time to find a new one.

  • I'm sorry you are stuck in limbo.  This is why I don't like early ultrasounds.  Everything may very well be fine and it was just too early to see much.  Its too bad they are making you wait 2 weeks instead of 1 though since it is so stressful.  I agree you may want to switch doctors if you don't like how they are treating you.  Good luck.

  • I'm over on the TTC after 35 board (trying for #2) but saw this and wanted to respond. I had the same thing happen with my son.  I was 6 weeks pregnant and having cramps. I freaked and went to the ER.they sent me to my OBGYN the next day. They did an ultrasound and saw the yolk sack but that was it, no heartbeat, no fetal pole. The ultrasound tech told me that we really should have seen all of this already, and basically gave me little hope. They told me to come back in a week. Well, that was the longest week of my life! But, we went back and saw a beautiful heartbeat and now I have a crazy, wonderful little boy who is about to turn 4 in 2 weeks!

i know everyone is different, but I wanted to let you know that others have been through this. I wish you all the luck in the world!!

  • Thank you all so much for your posts.  I actually have found another OB and his office was very kind to me over the phone when I explained my situation.  They are squeezing me in on Tuesday night to find out what is going on.

Your stories have given me some hope, but I am prepared for God's will at this point.  :)  Either way I will come back and let you all know the result.  Even if it's not my time to be here on this board, I plan to land here for good at some point!

     Happy weekend everyone!

  • My first ultrasound was same, went back at 7 weeks and there was our baby :

Also, since this is your first you may not realize just how much cramping alot! is completely normal. As long as its not accompanied by bleeding u should be fine.
