Baby Showers

What time of day?

Not a baby shower but since there isn't a birthday party board, I'm asking here...

Livi's first birthday is coming up and I'm thinking about her party.

I really like the idea of a cute ice cream theme.  I wasn't planning on doing food other than dessert stuff  - is there a particular time of day that's ok for this?  I don't want our guests showing up starving expecting a meal and finding only dessert waiting for them.

Any suggestions?  Is it just not a good idea to only have dessert?  I'm open to serving appetizers or something as well but I thought an ice cream social would be fun.

Re: What time of day?

  • Clearly, don't have it at meal time!  but I would have appetizers on hand too.  Not everyone will necessarily want ice cream, and/or they'll simply be munchy before the ice cream part.

I'd make the invitations up in a way that says "ice cream social" and really puts out the expectation of wha tthe party will be.

  • Right, obviously not at a meal time but is 2pm ok?

Too late for lunch, too early for dinner so small apps/dessert is ok?

  • I think 2 would be fine.

  • Ok.  I figured I was somewhat overthinking the time element but I don't want anyone rushing off to a Burger King because they were expecting a buffet :)

    Thanks!!

Again, just make it clear on the invitation!  "Join us for an ice cream social to celebrate DD's birthday!" - something to that effect.  You could even put a small line about "snacks and drinks will also be provided".

  • 2pm or 3pm...when ever your DD will be the most cheerful! You don't want to have people arrive and then she wakes up from a nap--guaranteed way to ruin a party!!

  • I agree with PPs suggestion to word the invitation as an ice cream social- and I think 2 is the perfect time...The only suggestion I have for a 1st bday is to work it around LO's nap time so you don't have a cranky monster!  I think starting anytime between 1-3ish would be ok.

  • I think 2 would be the perfect time.  As a guest, I wouldn't expect a full meal but as a hostess, I would put "ice cream social" on the invitations just so people know what to expect.  Also, as a hostess, I would have out some other munchy type foods for the party.

  • I always do parties around my kids' naps so they aren't grumpy.  If 2 works for you that would be fine for an ice cream only kind of party.  Also, as ECB said...make it clear on the invitations (that it is an ice cream social kind of party) so they don't expect food.  Either 2 or 3 would be fine.
  • I like the ice cream idea.  I don't think appetizers are necessary.  Especially if it's noted on the invite that it's an ice cream party.

And I think an early afternoon time is fitting....sometime after lunch, but not too close to dinner.
