Viral bug or something else?

I took DS to the pedi yesterday and he said he has viral gastroenteritis and there's nothing to do but wait it out and make sure he doesn't get dehydrated. But I have a feeling is something else.

*gross details ahead*

He doesn't have diarrhea, his stools are loose, pasty, and what concerns me is that he seems not to be digesting properly, I can see what he eat almost whole, just like when they first start solids and it comes out almost the way it came in. At night--not every night--he's cramping and belly very distended, inconsolable. A couple night I had to massage his belly and I gave him a tea I take to ease digestion and it stimulated another bowel movement and then he was able to sleep.

Pedi said he's fine and just to come back if he's the same for a total of 10 days. I'm a little disillusioned with his pedi, he didn't even suggest the brat diet, or probiotics like yogurt and kefir to restore his natural flora...

What do you think? Have you dealt with anything similar?

Re: Viral bug or something else?

  • We just went through something similar. I think DD had a bit of a stomach ache earlier this week. She was saying, "boo boo tummy." She had very little appetite and was rather cranky. I just gave her plenty of fluids, and kept her diet pretty bland. I gave her applesauce and roasted chicken and plain pasta. A couple days later, she seems to be back to her usual self. Eating and playing like normal.

Sometimes I also see some foods DD ate come out in her diaper whole- especially corn.

I'm sorry you're dissatisfied with the pedi but sometimes waiting it out is all it takes. I hope your LO feels better really soon!

  • I have no advice, other than to follow your gut.  If you think your pedi is wrong, take LO in again.  You live with your child, not your doctor, so you know what is out of the norm for a well and sick baby.  I will say however, that DD often passes almost whole food sometimes too.  Anything with a thick skin (grapes, corn, etc) tends to be the biggest culprit.  Even with teeth, they still don't always chew everything thoroughly at this age, they're still figuring out how to use those teeth and their jaw.  So I wouldn't worry about that part.

Not dissatisfied that he didn't give him medicine, I'm more of natural medicine type of person, but dissatisfied that he didn't even offer "comfort measures" or natural alternatives to soothe the symptoms. For example, he only told me to give him Pedialyte if he seemed to get worse to avoid dehydration, Pedialyte contains sugars, and artificial flavors and colors, something no kid should be drinking any time, much less when sick.
