DD started coughing last night and woke up congested this morning, still coughing. I'm trying not to panic about rsv because she hasn't been exposed and has her synagis shots, her pedi can't get us in until Monday and I don't want to expose her to the germ infested er if its just a cold. I knew she would get sick eventually but we have been so careful I was hoping we could get through this first season illness free. Sorry if I'm rambling, on top of preemies being more susceptible to rsv, we almost lost my sister to it when she was an infant so I'm having a really hard time keeping my cool and treating this like a cold.

Re: first cold?
I know exactly what you are feeling. We are not able to get the RSV shot because she is not eligable. She was a preemie as well 35 and 6 and in the NICU for 8 days due to breathing problems. We had our first scare thanksgiving week. (Pneumonia) was in there for a week. It was the worst thing I have ever had to go through. People that don't have a preemie baby don't understand how scary it is for our babies to get sick. It could mean anything. I am scared to think that whenever she gets sick she will be in the hospital. She just started a cold last week along with a fever of 104. She was in the PICU Friday night to get testing done. Found out it was Infulenza. It's okay if you are worried. I was the same way. I told my SO that if it took us going to the doctor a million times I don't care because then we would be on top of her sickness instead of waiting too long and "letting it ride out" She is now "letting it ride out" For the most part, but still keeping a VERY close eye on her! So go with your gut. We started he out with a cool mist humidifier and warm showers with me to loosen the mucus. Use the bulb to suck out all those boogers. Is there another doctor your baby could see in the same practice? We did that because I was NOT waiting to get an answer if my doc was not in.. Monday is a far away and if you are really concerned, try and see another doc. Even if it is just a cold they have to ride out, at least you got some piece of mind. It really helped for me!
We are using the bulb syringe religiously, and when they schedule an appointment its for any avail Dr unless we request a specific one. They did just call because someone cancelled for tomorrow so they can get us in and the Dr called in a claritin script to rule out drainage causing the cough. Hopefully the claritin does the trick and tomorrow is just an ease the mind appointment. They did say if it gets worse or she starts a fever, or becomes inconsolable tonight go to the er.
I only say "people that don't have preemies don't understand" because I have had someone tell me "Get over it and enjoy what you have in front of you. You kid will get sick so just stop worrying"
Well okay, if that person only understood that every time so far that my daughter has been sick she has ended up in the hospital. And the first time with pneumonia.... had a very hard time recovering and I was scared she wasn't going ot make it. Not saying that not ALL people don't understand. I should have worded that differently.
Good, I do hope you get ease of mind! It's hard for any mommy or daddy to go through that! Esp when peanut is a preemie. I hope your LO feels better soon and recovers fast!
My DD caught her first cold right after Xmas too. She was born at 32 weeks with no health problems on 9/12 and just spend 3 weeks in the NICU. After Xmas, she was very congested, coughing, sneezing and wasn't eating of sleeping well. Poor girl was miserable. I took her to see doc last week, who said it's prob a cold and let her ride it out with no meds. When she wasn't getting better & was vomiting her milk, I took her back on Monday. Another doc checked her and could hear wheezing in her lungs. They started her on albuterol treatments to help open up her lungs to breath easier. I give it to her at home every 4 hrs. It definitely has been helping. I went back to the doc yesterday for a follow up appt and she breathing better, isn't as congested or coughing as much. They never checked if she had RSV because they said it wouldn't have affected how they treat her. Plus she didn't have a fever.
The past week has been heartbreaking seeing her sick. I got a hot steam humidifier that's great too. I used a regular bulb aspirator from the NICU to suck out her snot. It works ok, but I then got the BabyFrida aspirator that is AWESOME! I highly recommend it. It's super gross seeing all that snot come out, but it totally works the best! I'm so glad my DD is getting better. She's not throwing up milk anymore. Her appetite isn't back up to 4 oz per feeding yet. She's taking in 3 oz for now. And right before getting sick, she was starting to sleep through the night. Last couple nights she's sleeping better and up to 6 hrs a stretch at night.
Hope your DD feels better soon. Definitely take her to see a doctor instead of waiting. Happy new year!
