6mo with strong tongue thrust

How did you get your little one to want/enjoy eating solids with a strong tongue thrust? Our DD still has a rather strong tongue thrust that even the pedi noticed when giving her last round of vaccinations (one is oral) but didn't say she was concerned about it. DD seems to like the taste of the solids but doesn't enjoy the process of eating it, she has even started pushing out the bottle nipple during feedings as well. So any advice on how to overcome the tongue thrust or is it just a waiting game?

TIA

Re: 6mo with strong tongue thrust

  • We just kept offering but if I could do it again I would wait it out. Looking back I don't think he was ready until about seven months. There's no hard and fast rule that your baby HAS to have solids at six months so if you're comfortable waiting it won't hurt.

  • Dd is nearly six months and last night eating for her just clicked. She went from spitting out all the food to opening her mouth in anticipation of her next spoonful and ate 3 ozs that was mixed with rice cereal and breast milk plus some mashed banana because she still seemed interested in eating.

So keep trying. Also make sure she is hungry but not starving and fussing.

As for her disinterest, dd is totally disinterested in her bottles these days. I guess they are more aware now and want to take in the world around them. All I can think to do is limit the distractions
  • I don't think DD actually swallowed any of her cereal until the 3rd or 4th day of trying.  We started making sure to put the cereal at the back of her tongue instead of in front, which helped.  Once she accidentally swallowed some a couple of times, she started to get the hang of it and stopped pushing it out with her tongue as much.
