Cloth Diapering

Rumparooz v. Bum Genius??

Hello Ladies!

I am new to this whole cloth diapering thing, but have known since the moment I got pregnant I wanted to use cloth.  Economically, environmentally, and for baby they seem to be ideal.  I am about 6 months pregnant and I have been doing a lot of research on cloth to figure out which brand and type will work best for us.  I really like pocket diapers, because I feel they will be easy for my DH and sitter to use.  Both Rumparooz and Bum Genius seem like good brands.  I am currently leaning more towards the Rumparooz, but they are more expensive, so if Bum Genius are just as great I could be easily swayed.   Any input or advice would be a huge help in getting started in the cloth diaper world.

Also, what items and how many do you reccomend for my stash?

 Thank you!!

  • You'll probably want to try both. The fit of any diaper will be different with each baby. Personally, I love my RaR best of all my CD's, but I have heard that the rise in them is too short to use them as long as other OS pockets. The BGs are awesome dipes, but I don't love the way they fit DS as much as the RaR. Neither of them will fit a newborn if you get the OS option, so that's something else to consider. Kelly's Closet website has a good checklist so you can get an idea of what you want numbers-wise in your stash.

  • I really really like Bum Genius :) especially the freetime!  But I also have some Rumparooz and can tell you that it's the same thing, just that Rumparooz has cuter patterns of course.  But overall I think they work the same and have about the same fit. Good luck!

  • I only have RaR's covers but they have more rise snaps and is a trimmer fit IMO.  I also have BG 4.0's, a Freetime, and an Elemental, the old sized AIO's, and the discontinued fitteds.  I haven't tried my fitteds yet so no info on those.  The AIO's are the trimmest since they are sized and have an optional pocket.  The elementals are pretty trim too but take FOREVER to dry. The pockets take the shortest time to dry but are the bulkiest and finally the Freetime is trim for a OS AIO but dries faster than an Elemental.
  • I wouldn't go with all 1 brand, try a few of both! I like both brands you mentioned. We use BG4.0s for overnight and I like the RaR for out of the house.

Other brands you might look in to: Blueberry (my fave!), Tots Bots, FuzziBunz (I like them, but they seem to get very mixed reviews).

    BFP #1: 3.28.11 Dx w/ PIH @ 24w DS Born @ 36w: 11.7.11 6 Days in NICU
    BFP #2: 8.31.16 Dx w/ GD @ 28w DD Born @ 36w: 4.21.17

  • I would try both.  It's best to try out a variety because what works for my DD may not work for your LO.

I loved RaR when DD was an infant, but the rise is very short and she outgrew them around 7 months.  I love BG as well and that they make up a large portion of my CD stash.  I also highly recommend Blueberry/Swaddlebees.

  • As PP said, both brands are great.

RaR tend to run a bit smaller in the rise, but when you have both, that works out really well for you. We have a mixture of both and when LO is transitioning in size, I've got one or the other to help us avoid leaking when it counts.

E.g. at 6 months, my RaR started leaking but BG was fine, then a month later it was time to size LO up in the BG but the RaR next size was fitting great. Then they both worked great until the next transition stage. It was nice to know that I could have a "go to" diaper when I needed it.

  • Thank you everyone for all your help and advice.

  • I would also recommend buying some of both. I had only bough 1 RaR in my pre-baby stash. Since it is currently my fav, I then went and bought 4 more used after baby. I love them. But, I recognize I like them so much now b/c they fit best now... and that might change as she grows. I have many different pocket options as she grows, I presume I will have different favorites over the next year or two.
I am having trouble updating tickers--But I am due on April 2015. I have 2 older step children: 9 and 14 yrs and I also recently had 2 younger children: 2 years and 1 year... so this means I will be having 3 under 3--and trying to fit our family of 7 into our minivan--eek!
