Preemies

Solids

We started trying solids with DS when he was 6 months actual 4 months adj. he's almost 7 months actual now and still not really interested in them. Are solids one of those light switch things like eating? He shows interest when we are eating but doesn't want to eat much when we offer it. We've tried sweet potatoes, green beans, apple and finally rice cereal but nothing. Is this just a "keep trying" kind of thing ?

Re: Solids

  • We tried solids at 6m actual, 4 adjusted with zero interest. We tried again the next month with the same response. At 6m adjusted it really was like a light switched on. They have had turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, peaches, prunes, bananas, lasagna, some beans and cheese, green beans...All in the last two weeks.

  • Definitely something to keep trying.  I wouldn't necessarily wait a month in between, but just keep trying whenever it is convenient.  Adalyn didn't really like rice cereal or oatmeal, and started enjoying the purees.  We only gave them to her once a day for a long time, then twice a day (when she wanted it).  We've recently started putting some cheerios and puffs, as well as cut up turkey or chicken, for her to eat and pick up herself.  I don't know if we really follow any rules or anything, but she mostly gets her calories from formula.  The only "rule" we followed was to feed her all the green veggies first, then the other colors, before we introduced any fruits.

  • at this age just take their cues.  I would continue to offer solids but not force it.  All babies are different.  My DD was a terrible bottle feeder but really thrived with solids and moved along quickly to 3 meals/finger foods.  These preemies keep us on our toes, we never really followed any strict rules and really just paid close attention to what was working and what wasnt.

  • Keep trying!  We started solids when my LO was 6 months actual.  We mainly offered finger foods and some purees.  For a long time she would play and explore which is great for them too.  I would say that within the past few weeks she is really associating food with eating and will fuss if she sees someone eating because she wants food too.  She uses her pincer grasp to pick up food and is getting really good at chewing and swallowing.

  • Thanks guys!

About the gag reflex... he did that with bananas but didn't seem to really do it with anything else.  How are you supposed to feed them? I feel so dumb asking that!!!

  • Right now the gag reflex is really close to the front of the tongue.  As they get older it moves further back.  Gagging is very common and normal as the baby learns to manipulate food in their mouth.  My LO has gagged but I can see the food in the middle of her tongue.  It can be scary, but gagging =/= choking.  I would just keep offering a variety of foods and textures.  The more he is exposed to the better he will get!
