Adoption

Affording Adoption

Hi all! I've been around for a little while so I know this has come up before, but we are starting to really try and save/fundraise and I've noticed some new members popping up so I thought I would write this post....

How did you all save for /fundraise for your adoptions? For those that went the fundraising route if you care to share some ideas.

Thanks!

  • We are lucky that we both got new jobs with increased pay in 2012, so we've been funneling all our extra income as well as birthday and Christmas checks from family into savings we are saving 950/month of our regular income for the adoption, and have received 2 larger checks from family as well as an anonymous cash donation. We have a little over half saved right now.

With our savings goal each month, we should be fully funded by July, which we anticipate to be a few months after we're officially waiting. We most likely will have all the before the final payment is due, which is at placement.

  • Thank you for asking (re-asking?) this!  Great ideas from the posters so far. The cost of adoption is one of the biggest reasons we're going to try to go the independent route.  Hopefully that will make a difference.

  • This probably won't help you much, but we felt that God was calling us to adoption, so we knew that He would provide the funds. I never worried about where the money would come from. A major water leak in our house and the insurance settlement ended up providing the remaining $10,000 that we needed beyond what we already had in our savings. It was a headache to go through that problem, but it was what the Lord had in mind for providing the remaining money!

This is our approach as well. Honestly, I have no idea where the money will come from but I'm confident we will be able to afford it when the time comes. Right now we are focusing on paying off bills, saving, and cutting out extra spending.

  • We didn't fundraise but we cut our expenses back.  I often referred to that time as being adoption-poor.  It was sort of a game.

I am a big advocate of Dave Ramsey and would listen to him to get excited about saving.  (FYI-- Dave Ramsey is not a fan of expensive adoption.... it's actually a conversation I'd love to have w/him over coffee one day! )
