pacifier

Is your LO still using one? Did you get rid of it already?  Whats your plan or what did you do to get rid of it?

I'm not in a hurry to get rid of it, but was trying to think of a game plan to do it, before the new baby comes, for sure.

How often did your LO use the paci?  DS uses it for naps and bedtime, which I'm dreading taking away, since he is a horrible sleeper to begin with.

Re: pacifier

  • Yes and no.  From birth she only used a paci at night or nap time to help her fall asleep.  She didn't even use it overnight.  She liked the Mam brand.  Then, a couple of months ago she got a cold and refused to use the Mam paci's.  She got over her cold but still would not take it. So, I packed them away.  Then we ran into all sorts of sleep issues about a month ago.  We thought it was bed related because we converted her crib to a toddler bed.  Nope, converting her crib back made it worse.  It was the lack of a paci, but she didn't want her Mam paci's back.  Luckily, a friend left her paci at our house and I tried giving her that one and it worked.  So, now we are back on paci but only at bed/nap time and still not through the night.  I am not worried about it at all.  She'll grow out of it one day.

  • Ugh, I'm dreading this.  DS is a paci addict.  He asks for his "binky" all the time.  (He just says "binky? binky?").  I'm not sure what we're going to do, but I'm not too worried about it yet.  He just uses it for night time and naps right now.

  • Just naps and bedtime here too! There is no way I am dropping this any time soon, even though the Pedi was adamant about dropping it before 18m. To hell with that. Whenever he wants to come to my house and put my screaming maniac baby to sleep without a pacifier then I'll gladly drop it.

I got her to the point where I will occasionally give it to her in the car if I know she's tired, but she knows she has to put it in the cup holder before she gets out of the car. This and the fact that she knows she can't have it unless she's in her crib (in the house) is good enough for me.

  • Now he only uses it in his crib. I am going to ask his Dr. her opinion of it when he goes for his 18 month visit. He is no where close to getting all of his teeth, so I like the idea of having it for that over the coming months with all those molars, but I'd like to have it gone by 2. We will see!

  • Only in the crib here too. And I have no plans to get rid of it. We tried a few months ago, and it was a disaster, so I think we'll wait awhile.
  • We are using it for naps and bedtime as well. I really don't know how we are going to get rid of it. Especially once the baby comes and the baby will have pacis. It's not like I can just hide all the pacis from DS.

  • Also just naps and bedtime here (though he'll steal them out of the crib and run around with them if we are upstairs).  Pedi said we should ditch them within the next month because it will be harder if we wait and they should be gone by 2.  All teeth are in except 2 yr molars, so I'm thinking we'll cold turkey it in a few weeks.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • We tried a few months ago because Dylan threw us out of the stroller at the mall and I didn't have a spare. After 24 hours I RAN out and bought him a new one.
About a month later he ended up getting hand, mouth foot disease yeah so much fun and because his mouth was FULL of canker sores for 1 week he couldn't use the Paci at all let alone eat anything. I decided to not give it back once his mouth was heeled and he was totally fine without it since it had been a week of not using it. In a way we kinda lucked out but I still paid by being up at night for a week straight with that awful sickness. Poor guy :

  • Naps and bedtime only and she freaks every morning when we take it away. I'm dreading taking it away, and have a gut feeling we're going to have to go cold turkey. I'd like it gone by 2 at the very extreme latest.

This exactly; he hates when we take it away, but has gotten better and no longer throws fits.  I dread taking it away, because it is such a comfort item for him too.

  • Still using it for naps/bedtime -- I am dreading taking it away because he's such a good sleeper, and I don't want to mess with that.  In fact, we know he's ready for night night when he'll actually take the paci and hold onto it.

Sometimes I regret giving a paci, but it gives him such comfort at bedtime and it helps him sleep, so I definitely think it was worth it.

I regret it some days too, but it really helped in the beginning so I'm not too upset with it. If it were a 24-7 thing, I think I'd regret it more. My mom gives me grief about it.

  • We only use it for naps and bedtime. He will grab it out of the crib once in a while, but doesn't cry if we take it away. I plan on getting rid of it before 2 years but not sure how that will go.

  • I've noticed lately he has started to have an emotional need for it. When he gets upset or scared he says "Beebee?!" ... "BEEBEE!!?" like, panicked. (Beebee = binky) and then calms down once he has it.

So, yeah, we're going to have to nip that in the bud. DS1 was binky free (bedtime and everything) by 2 years old. That is my goal for DS2. I feel like the longer we wait the harder it will be to ditch.
