Hypospadias surgery tomorrow...

DS is having his hypospadias surgery tomorrow morning...we've known since he was a couple days old that this was coming, but I am still anxious about it.

In addition to the surgery - which I know is routine out-patient, but still, is surgery nonetheless - I am nervous about how he will handle not being able to have a bottle in the morning...I am preparing myself for an all out meltdown, and just hate to see him so upset, and THEN send him in for surgery :-(  You'd think they'd come up with a better way by now, especially for babies!  He can at least have some Pedialyte 4 hours before surgery, so I'm going to wake him early tomorrow to give him some so he has something in his belly at least.

Please wish us luck, and keep DS in your T&P tomorrow!

Prayers! What time is surgery? I was so worried about not feeding DS1 pre surgery but his surgery was so early [5 am] he didn't really notice because he was so tired. Good luck!

His surgery is not until 9:45, which I was a little disappointed with, because he usually wakes up at 6:30-7 and gets a bottle right away.  I was hoping for really early in the morning, but they said they do it by age, so there must be a younger baby or two ahead of him.

I'm currently debating whether to wake him at 2:15 this morning to give him a bottle before the cutoff (2:45)...

  • Good luck and he'll be fine! My DS had hypospadias surgery (2 stage repair) at 9 months and 18 months.  Babies are amazingly resilient and they bounce back so fast.  I remember hours after DS was done with his first surgery -- he was sleeping and I was waiting for him to wake up and when he did he just looked up and smiled at me.

  • Good luck!! My DS had that surgery when was 7 months old and while it was scary, he recovered very quickly and did great. I hope you have a similar experience!

A quick word of advice - if they make you double diaper, try to find natural fiber diapers for the inner diaper. If you use a regular one, the absorbent stuff inside gets everywhere when you cut the front of the diaper! Its gross and cannot be healthy for a healing wound. We actually ended up cutting up baby wash clothes to make a little bumper around his penis as it healed. So much easier than cutting up diapers!

  • My DS (30 weeker) had surgery to repair 2 hernias & a muscle wall weakness when he was 7 months old. I woke him up at the last possible allowable time frame to feed him. He did surprisingly well and really only started to melt down about 30 minutes before he was taken back. Try to stay as calm as possible, he will feed from your energy. and then you will get lots of snuggles once he wakes up...and he will be crazy hungry, but you will both do great!
