Why does everyone tell me DD is so tiny??

DD is 8 months today! (Yes, I fell off the bump-wagon, but I still read but just don't post!) I am still BFing but also supplement because of work. I weighed her the other day and she was 17.2. She is a lightweight, but meeting all milestones, etc. Anyway... twice today people said, "She is 8 months?? She is tiny!" I know she's not a huge chubster, but i don't think she's tiny! And now it's making me worry!

Re: Why does everyone tell me DD is so tiny??

  • I'm on the opposite end. DS weighed in at almost 24 pounds at 6 and a half months. Right now he's in 12-18 month clothes. His thighs are enormous and we get lots of comments on how big he is. I just know the doctor is going to accuse me of overfeeding him when we go for his 9 month.

How is her weight for length ratio? Is she tiny all around or just super skinny?

  • People always tell us how BIG DD is. She is 9 months tomorrow and I think she is definitely over 20 lbs. She is in 12 month clothing right now. Someone actually told DH on Xmas that he feeds her too much! RUDE! No he doesn't she is hungry we feed her. Sorry but that's how it goes.

  • At Micah's 9mo checkup, he was 17.6 pounds. The doctor wasn't concerned, because he's still steadily gaining and following his growth curve. She said that he isn't going to be a "big" guy, but that was fine by her. Tell peole to mind their own business!

  • I know how you feel, so sorry!  At DS's 2 month appointment, the Dr. kept on commenting on how small he was and I got fixated on it.  I was so worried about him.  At his next appointment, a different doc (who I could have hugged) answered my concerns by saying that as long as they're staying on their growth curve, even if it's the 5th percentile, they're doing perfectly well.  AND, the growth curve percentiles in the US differ from the global standard because generally, American babies are bigger.  And bigger doesn't necessarily mean healthier.  Your baby may be smaller compared with the national average, but totally on par with the global norm, and as long as she's growing and meeting milestones, she's perfect!

Ignore those comments.  Probably just from people who have forgotten how little babies are.  Yes, babies are little.

  • My little guy is finally creeping up to 15 lbs and 26ish inches at 8 months old! Most 4 month olds look way bigger than him! Hes meeting his milestones too though and appears to be happy and healthy, just small. To me thats all that matters. And btw, I feel like I (and likely most parents) would b the 1st to notice and worry if my baby doesnt seem right. Im sure if there is any reason for concern the dr will take every precautionary action possible to see what's really going on. Thats how our pedi is at least. have u had any extra growth checkups for ur little peanut?
  • I was just thinking of you yesterday....!

I got that a lot with Ds1, it's annoying! I think she sounds pretty average though being 17 lbs. I think R is 18 ish pounds. She must be petite and if she is meeting milestones than I wouldn't worry. You would get the opposite if she was large too, people always have to give there opinion!

  • My DD is 9 mo today and weighs 17.11 but she is so long she wears 12 mo clothes. She is like 50th for weight and 99th for height. I think that that is pretty average for 8 months.

  • My little girl is "tiny" to me, but a "chunk" to everyone else.  She was weighed at 8.5 mo, and weighed in at 18 lbs.  She just started to wear 9 mo clothes, and she is very active. She is short though, so that is probably why they call her a "chunk." I have always had weight issues, so maybe it just bothers me.  Just let the little girl be!

  • Thanks everyone! She is definitely just petite. Her height and weight percentiles are perfect according to the pedi. She also wasn't concerned because she is following her growth curve. She's meeting all her milestones, even some advanced (because she has older siblings to keep up with!) People are definitely rude, and since i hear it a few times it just makes my mind whirl! I had some lady come over to us while we were all out to dinner the other day.
She started yapping about how beautiful they all are (then called DD a boy - she didn't realize the grey and pink cheetah print fleece top was for a girl!) and started hovering over my ds's heads while they were eating. I looked at her and said, "Would you like to just sit down?" in a snarky voice. Seriously. Say they're cute. Thank you. But quit hovering over us and let us be!

  • Luke is tiny- he always has been under the 20th percentile for weight and 40th for height. He's around 17 lbs at 8months.

As long as they stay on their own curve there's nothing to be concerned with. He's also going to be a late mover- but so was DH. My pedi is not concerned (even though I stress over it).

THis, all of this, people do forget how tiny babies can be.  And some people don't know what else to say except "big" and "small"  I am sure your LO is absolutely fine.  I like that this baby is a little bit smaller for me as DS was a big baby and he KILLED my back :-)

  • People keep telling me DS is so small, they said the same about DD (actually DS was almost exactly the same size DD was at 9 months). Now DD is 2.5 and the size of a 4 year old, she's off the charts, so I'm not as worried as I was with her lol.

Also he isn't exactly tiny, he's pretty much 50th percentile across the board.

  • juniper is 8 mos and just hit 17.11.

to me, she looks thick. we EBF, but some foods in evening.

anyhow, when she was first born at 6lbs, ,everyone said how "little" she was. it made me so uncomfortable, and even worried about her.

then after i finally had it with the "little" or "too small" or "are you sure she's eating" comments, i finally told everyone i had her on a diet.

don't worry. unless your doc says otherwise, other people can bite their tongue. it's not appropriate to comment on things like that, unless it is a family member that knows you and your context.

  • DD is the same :) don't worry.

  • I get this all the time too! DD is 26 in and a little over 15 lbs. What makes me mad is when people say things like "Don't you feed her???" Yes, bishes, I feed my child. ALL THE TIME. lol
