No peanuts?

I have been reading you should stop eating peanuts during your 3rd trimester in order to decrease the possibility of a peanut allergy.

Is anyone following this? What are your thoughts?

I have come to love my afternoon apple and peanut butter and I will be so sad to have to part with it  Sad

  • I've never heard that. These "things you supposedly aren't supposed to eat" categories are getting ridiculous. FWIW, I ate peanut butter toast every.single.morning when I was pregnant with Ava, including while I was in labor, and she doesn't have a peanut allergy.

  • From what I have read there is no proof there is any relation and it is "basically" speculation that eating peanuts during pregnancy causes an allergy.

I do think if peanut allergies are in the family it would not hurt to avoid... aside from that it's a personal choice... similar to deli meats and the long list of other "maybe's"

  • The peanut allergy science keeps going back and forth.  There is a study that makes this association and then there's a study that makes that association and then a study that dispells both associations.  From what I understand we don't know why there are more peanut allergies . . . there are some studies that show that societies that eat more peanuts actually have fewer peanut allergies.

  • I have never heard that and ate Peanutbutter and Jelly for breakfast every morning with my first pregnancy.  My daughter is just fine with no peanut allergy.  My mom has a severe peanut allergy and we were worried that she could possibly have it, but she's fine.  On this pregnancy though, I get the worst indigestion/heartburn in the entire world when I have anything containing peanuts.  It's very weird.  Starting to wonder if baby boy has a peanut allergy and is letting me know early on.

  • My SIL avoided peanuts and anything nut related like the plague when she was pg with her 1st. Turns out my niece has a severe peanut allergy. SIL craved peanut butter with her 2nd and would go out just to eat peanut butter and nuts, her son has no such allergy. I think people read way too much into stuff, all these avoids are getting ridiculous.

This. Keep enjoying your peanut butter! It's got protein, Vitamin E and minerals in it!

  • I ate peanut butter my entire pregnancy with DS and he has no allergy.

On another note, my sister hates peanut butter and never ate any while pregnant or not pregnant. Her daughter has a severe peanut allergy.

  • what you are asking doesn't even make sense. so if you EAT something, your baby will become allergic to it? please don't believe that and continue eating your peanut butter!

Believe it or not, that was exactly what went around as "truth" when I was pregnant with DS four years ago. It freaked DH out enough that he made me swear off my PB&J sandwiches for all of 3rd tri.

This time around, I'm not avoiding it, but I still don't eat it as often. Peanut allergies are scary, and for me, it was worth skipping the PB even if it turned out that the study was false. I love PB, but don't love it THAT much ;)

It's a personal decision, so just decide for yourself!

Besides, the oils in the PB act as a natural laxative.

Using common sense and thinking through the items you should avoid and why is important.  By the same logic regarding the peanuts, we should not eat wheat, milk products, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, eggs, soy, or peanuts while pg because they are the eight most common food allergies.

  • That seriously blows, if that is the case.  I am always a little "off" in the morning and nothing sounds good for breakfast but toast with PB...I probably eat it 3-4 times a week, just so I can take my medication before work.
