Hi All,
Hoping someone can recommend an OBGYN in the Plainfield, CT area. I am originally from RI and am still traveling to RI for my yearly visits. Would like to find someone closer to home as we are TTC and once I am pregnant it will not be that easy to travel to RI for weekly visits. Anyone have any suggestions? ) Thanks!!
Re: Obgyn Plainfield Area?
It depends... I'm a RI transplant too, and moved to Plainfield when we were pregnant w/our first (which was complicated), so we kept our original OB and delivered at W&I in RI.
We have 2 hospitals nearby to choose from. If you choose Backus in Norwich (our choice, we felt more welcomed at Backus when we did the tour. Everyone was friendly and warm and we just felt good there) there is currently only one office that delivers babies there - OB/GYN Services of Norwich - and their offices are only in Norwich. They have lots of doctors and 3 midwives, but they are the only office. (We delivered our 2nd baby at Backus, but there was another office that delivered there at the time too. Now our midwife from that office is at OB/GYN Services of Norwich. We're using them, but I like their office & practices a little less than the other one that closed.) Also, the local (to plainfield) pediatricians don't have DR rights at Backus, so if you choose a plainfield pediatrician the on-call pediatrician at the hospital will evaluate your LO (wasn't a big deal to us, but it can be to other people).
The other hospital is Day Kimball in Putnam. It's a slightly newer hospital and I have some friends that delivered there. However, when we went for our tour the people were NOT that friendly (no one was rude, but they weren't friendly either), we did not get a warm/fuzzy feeling (though the L&D rooms are beautiful), and felt rushed. There are more options for OB/GYN offices that deliver to Day Kimball (3 I think) and there are several locations for OB appointments, depending on where in Plainfield you live. I will say that while it is probably just COINCIDENCE, the 2 people I know the best that delivered at Day Kimball both had very tough labors. I personally like Backus better, so it's probably just my reading into things, but....
I would suggest that before you pick a local OB/GYN that you schedule a tour of the birthing center of both hospitals to find out which one you like best and go from there.
Good Luck and feel free to message me with any additional questions - I've been in Plainfield now for 7 years!
Wendy
I'm 27 weeks and planning on delivering at Day Kimball in Putnam. This is my first delivery so I can only talk about the experiences that I've had thus far. The PP was correct in saying that there are options for visits. There are 2 offices, one in Plainfield and one in Putnam.
The delivery doctors will depend on who is on call, first there are 2 mid-wives and then 2 doctors. You can request a doctor only delivery if you aren't comfortable with the idea of having a mid-wife deliver. So far things have gone extermely smoothly for me. I am seeing one of the mid-wives and she is great. She gave me her personal phone number so that if I had any questions, I could contact her directly. My appointments have been good too.
As far as actual delivery, I've heard good things about Backus but have never known anyone to deliver there.
I've had a few friends deliver at DKH and they've had great experiences. One c-section and 4 natural births. The only drawback that I can think of for DKH is that there is no NICU on site. They determine by 35 weeks if you will deliver at DKH or if you will need to go to their 'sister' hospital UMASS for the NICU. If when you deliver and there are any problems, the baby is transferred to UMASS (about 35 minute drive).
The deciding factor for me was my insurance, DKH was in-network and I have the high deductable so it was the cheapest option as well.
Lots to think about!
Good Luck!
