Pregnant after 35

Spotting - should I be worried?

Hello ladies,

Okay, ordinarily this would be TMI but I figure this is probably one of the only places I can ask about this...I'm only 6 weeks pregnant (today - or maybe tomorrow) but had a + HPT 2 wks ago, confirmed by dr 2 days later.  Yesterday I started spotting, very light pink...might not have even noticed but I have this habit of looking at the tissue everytime I go to the bathroom.  It never got heavy but at one point was a little brown-ish.  This morning it's back to very light (i.e. nothing but a tiny spot noticeable on a panty liner I'm wearing) spotting.  I'm not having any unusual cramping or pain.  As you might imagine, this freaked me out last night...I looked online as well in some books I have and saw that 70% of women experience some bleeding during pregnancy but also know it could be the early sign of an impending miscarriage.  I pray it's not that.  I saw that I should contact my doctor but I'm military and have been assigned to an OB clinic but haven't had my first OB appointment yet (it's scheduled but still more than a week away) so other than having a blood test which confirmed pregnancy, I don't really have a doctor to call.  Has anyone else experienced something like I've described?  If so, did it turn out to be nothing or should I be concerned?  Please advise.

Re: Spotting - should I be worried?

  • A lot of my friends experienced spotting early in their pregnancies. Are you still having sex-- that can irritate the cervix or the vaginal walls and cause some minor spotting like you describe (everything gets drier down there until you start making the protective mucus/discharge).

When I had my miscarriage, I had NO warning spotting-- if that makes you feel better. I had some cramping and then within 30 minutes: heavy, heavy flow.

If your appointment is in a week with the OB, I'd just wait. You don't have any cramping, you aren't bleeding heavily, and it isn't bright red or have clots in it.

Hard not to worry, though! GL!

  • I'm so glad I signed up for this chat group because it is good to hear what others have to say.  I did call my OB office and the nurse is supposed to call me back but hasn't yet.  Last time I went to the bathroom, it was just slightly heavier than this morning when I got up but not heavy...almost like when I would just start a menstrual cycle but before it gets heavy.  It's still not red, nor is their clotting.  I am still having sex and we did yesterday though several hours before the spotting started.  I'm trying not to worry.  Appreciate youre repsonse!

  • As far as "wait and see," I guess I'll have to wait and see how today progresses but I'm a little nervous.  It is promising though to hear you did have spotting in your 4th pregnancy and ended up having a healthy baby.  Bleeding is still light enough that I still have the same panty liner on, haven't switched to a pad.  Hoping I won't need to.  Thanks for your feedback as well.

  • I agree its just one of those things that you have to wait and see what happens. It is a good sign that you have no cramping and its not heavy. With this pregnancy I had spotting about 3 times before 7 weeks and really freaked out but it turned out fine. I think it was due to my cervix being irritated by the progesterone I was on.  With my miscarriages I didn't even have spotting.  I hope you get good news at your appointment next week.  Try not to worry too much yet.

  • Thanks, I ended up talking to the OB nurse...they offered to do a HCG count blood test and another in a few days but she said it was more than likely from having intercourse since we did yesterday.  Doesn't mean I'm not AT ALL worried but I feel a little better and it is definitely nice to feel like I've got support of lots of other ladies on this board.

  • Welcome to the board, and yes, there are lots of very wise ladies here. I have no personal experience with spotting in early pregnancy, but intercourse can absolutely cause a little spotting due to the cervix being swollen and easily irritated. I would hold off for a few days and see if the spotting stops. If it's not bright red, heavy, or clotty, you should be all right. Of course, you'll want to keep your OB's office updated and call them immediately if the spotting gets heavier or you start feeling crampy.

  • Thanks again for your advice as well.  My OB clinic said the same thing about calling them if the bleeding gets heavier or I start to feel significant cramps.  I can't say I don't have any cramps but they are kind of like mild menstrual cramps that you sometimes get before your cycle.  I've felt this off and on since finding out I was pregnant two weeks ago.  I still feel a little nervous but will try and stay calm.
