Help me choose a carrier

I feel like the more I read up on it, the more confused I get. I never wore my DS, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to need a carrier for sporadic use at least with #2.

Here are my needs:

I won't be babywearing for many hours every day. It will be more for trips to the grocery store, and outings of that nature.

I have a bad back, so the more back support/even weight distribution, the better.

I may be sharing the carrier with my babysitter, who is a different size than me, so it needs to be easy to adjust.

It will mostly be for newborn/infant period. I don't plan to babywear a toddler.

All suggestions/advice welcome! TIA

  • I was going to say a woven wrap, as it has the best weight distribution, but if you plan to share with a babysitter I'm not sure they would be up to the learning curve, so I would instead suggest a mei tai. You tie them on, so they can easily be shared. They really aren't challenging to lean. If you don't plan to wear last the infant phase, you can likely get away with unpadded waist and shoulder straps.

  • We have an Ergo Sport, it's very adjustable so would be easy to share. And is easier on your back than some other carriers.

  • I also would suggest a buckle-SSC (like an Ergo, but not necessarily that brand).  You may find that you babywear longer than you think; it's awfully convenient to tuck that 1.5yr old on your back in the grocery store, where little arms can't reach glass jars on the shelves. ;)

  • I was going to suggest a Mei Tai as well since it can be adjusted to fit anybody, but not sure if it'll work with a newborn? Haven't used it myself, just seems like there isn't enough to support a newborn while in the carrier.

How about a K'Tan? If you and your sitter are similar sizes that could work. It seems fairly easy to use as well.
