Is Elliot Still A Masculine Name?

Hello

DH & I are expecting our first!  It is important to us that a boy have a masculine name, and a girl have a feminine name.  We both love with the name Elliot for a boy.  But I've started to see people use it for their daughters.

What do you think?  Is it still a masculine name?  When you see/hear the name Elliot, do you think boy or girl?

Re: Is Elliot Still A Masculine Name?

  • I don't think of Elliot as a girl name, but I also don't think of it as very masculine either. It might be because the only Elliot(t) I have ever known was a bit strange and awkward.

  • Yes, I still feel strongly that Elliot is masculine.

  • To me it?s now becoming a unisex name. While I personally associate it as a boy?s name IRL I have only heard it on girls.

  • In 2011, there were 2,585 boys named Elliot/Elliott/Eliot/Eliott/Eliut/Eliotte and 635 girls. That's about 4:1 in favor of boys.

Compare that to 2005, when there were 1,537 boys and 215 girls named Elliott/Elliot/Eliot. That's a ratio of more than 7:1 in favor of boys.

Long story short, Elliot is still used predominantly for boys, but the gap is shrinking fast.

  • I don't consider Elliot unisex, but I've also never thought it sounded very masculine.
  • I think it is!

  • I would assume that a child named Elliot is a boy, although when I hear this name I think "intellectual" more than "jock."  I think naming a girl "Elliot" is weird.

So if you're looking for a name that's clearly a boy's name, but that's not necessarily a "tough" name, Elliot is a good choice.  If you are looking for a name that's really "tough" sounding, keep looking.

This. Just because a female character on Scrubs had the name does not make it unisex or feminine to me.

  • Yes, it is a boys name. I know alot of parents are taking masculine names that they think sound feminine and giving them to their daughters. They often follow up with "but I want to dress it up with a frilly MN"

The whole trend makes me feel ill.

I think it is a great name for a boy.

  • Boy. If I met a girl named Elliott I would assume the parents wanted a boy. Seeing all these boy names on girls makes me want to slam my head against a wall.

    This 100%

Also, people that stop using it because a few girls have the name is the reason why boy names "go to the girls". Stop being afraid to use boy names on boys!

  • Elliot is very masculine. To be blunt, anyone who would name a girl Elliot is stupid IMO.
  • Masculine, but moving steadily into the unisex category.

  • Masculine. Definitely. I wanted this for my boys name so badly but the hubs didn't agree. It makes me think of Pete's Dragon.

  • Totally masculine to me. It's not really my style though.
  • I just had a FB friend name her daughter Elliott and they call her Ellie. I still prefer it to be boy only, but it will likely become more unisex.
