Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Solids?

We started cereal several weeks ago.  We've been doing a tablespoon at a time, and she doesn't always even finish it.  Today we started sweet potatos.  I gave her a tablespoon and she loved them!  She cried when it was all gone.  I didn't want to give her any more in case she'd have an allergic reaction since it's just day one.

When did you start you giving LO more than a tablespoon at a time?

  • A severe allergic reaction is triggered with even tiny amounts.  Feeding her more than 1T isn't going to make anything worse.

True, but if it were to upset her stomach I'd rather not make it worse by giving her huge amounts on day 1.

  • Not really helpful now but you could do 1 T of food and 1T of oatmeal or cereal to fill them up. If DS is still hungry after the 1 or 2 oz of food, I usually mix some oatmeal in his bowl and feed him.

  • Hi :)  I never worried about how much I was giving him that early...as soon as he got the hang of it we were up to 2 ounces  and we never had a problem.  Hope this helps.
  • I always started with 2 oz for everything and then progress from there. Especially if there aren't any food allergies in the families to make you think LO would have allergies I wouldn't worry too much.

  • Thanks all.  She ate about an oz and a half today.  The kiddos are foster kids and we don't have much in the way of family history.  Other than a milk intolerance, the older one hasn't shown much of an allergy issue, so I'm not stressing too much.  She seriously loves the sweet potatos.
